HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 finally concluded with an explosive finale, setting the stage for a dangerous path for Ellie and Abby in the next chapter.

Based on a video game of the same name, the final moments of Season 2 tease that the upcoming chapter will focus on Abby's side of the story.

Ellie was focused on her vendetta against Abby (for killing Joel), and the audience sympathized with her. However, her choices in the finale blurred those lines, and it is hinted that Season 3 will be a tumultuous ride for both.

Both Abby and Ellie did morally questionable things in the finale, which sets their story for The Last of Us Season 3. Talking to Deadline, creator Craig Mazin discussed the weight of their actions:

“We understand that both Ellie and Abby are moving forward in trouble. They are in moral trouble, because their certainty is beginning to fail them...''

He added:

“What I want the audience to feel thematically at the end of the season is that they aren’t where they were, but they’re not yet where they are going to go. That there has always been a story that we’ve been telling about the good and bad of love, but we switch which side is good and bad sometimes…”

More on The Last of Us Season 2 finale in our story.

The Last of Us Season 2 finale teases what is next for Ellie and Abby

The Last of Us Season 2 finale made it evident that the upcoming chapter will likely focus on Abby's side of the story. Fans of the game would probably know that the horrific three days in Seattle will also be shown through Abby's point of view, and we will learn her side of the story.

Whichever side the show chooses to tell, the finale events made it clear that both Abby and Ellie are in moral trouble after the decisions and things they did in The Last of Us Season 2 finale.

While Ellie was somewhat justified in her revenge against Abby, considering how she brutally killed Joel, she did morally questionable things in the finale, which blurred the lines between good and bad for her.

In her pursuit of Abby, Ellie had a run-in with Owen and Mel, and she naturally asked them to point out Abby's location on a map. When the duo refuses to give up their friend's location, Ellie fatally shoots Owen and also shoots a pregnant Mel. When Mel asks Ellie to cut the baby out of her, she is confronted with her choices.

However, before Ellie could make a decision, Mel succumbed to her injuries and died. This is a turning point for Ellie's character in The Last of Us, as just like Abby, she also killed innocent people for her vendetta.

Talking about the impact of this situation on Ellie, Mazin discussed with Deadline:

''In this moment where you do feel like, ‘Oh my god, how am I still on this journey with you?’ I think it’s important for people to see that it’s not like Ellie is going, ‘I’m cool, whatever, it happened, let’s keep going for Abby.’ This breaks her.”

Just when Ellie is confronted by her horrible choices, she sees Abby in the lobby, holding Tommy at gunpoint. She shoots Jesse in the head and the screen cuts to black as another gunshot is heard and Ellie is begging her not to kill anyone else.

At this point in The Last of Us, both Abby and Ellie have become mirror images of each other, fueled with revenge. Talking about this obsession and how it will fuel their story in Season 3, Neil Druckmann added:

“There is an obsession there that, in our conversations, the metaphor has been, often, drug addiction. That you can get over it, and you can relapse, and the question is, can she fully get over it?”

Finally, teasing about Ellie and Abby's journey ahead, Mazin discussed:

''We don’t know where these two are going to end, but what I would hope the audience feels is that they are not done. They are not done growing, or they are not done falling. We’ll have to wait and see which it is.”
