From Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby to Paul Anderson's Arthur Shelby, Steven Knight's Peaky Blinders had the perfect casting and partly owes its success to the actors who brought life to this crime saga.

While the crime genre is a male-dominated world, the show broke the norm by introducing Helen McCrory's Aunt Polly, a badass female character.

Aunt Polly was a revelation in the series, even overpowering Tommy at times. She managed the family business while the Shelby men were in France and remained a powerful asset for the Peaky Blinders.

While Arthur was hot-headed and John was too naive to understand the ways of their profession, Tommy trusted Aunt Polly to execute every strategy with precision, which is why he blindly trusted her.

In the Peaky Blinders Season 4 finale, Tommy decides to fake Arthur's death and ambush Luca Changretta, and Aunt Polly's contribution to this plot proves that she called the shots in the family.

More on this in our story.

Aunt Polly was Tommy's most trustworthy ally in Peaky Blinders

Although Aunt Polly's impact on the Peaky Blinders and Tommy is far too vast to sum up in one moment, her actions in the Season 4 finale stand out as her most powerful.

Tommy's rivalry against Luca Changretta was easily one of the biggest plot points of the show, as the Italian mafia was hell bent on exacting revenge from the Birmingham leader for the death of his father.

Peaky Blinders has seen many antagonists throughout its six seasons. However, Luca Changretta managed to do the most damage, even executing John Shelby and almost killing Arthur Shelby.

Tommy's plan to ambush Luca Changretta with the support from Americans and fake Arthur's death would not have been possible without Aunt Polly. Faking Arthur's death was a risky move, and nobody knew (except Linda) about Tommy's master plan, except Aunt Polly, who executed it for him.

Aunt Polly not only strengthened the gang's relations with the American mafia by arranging a liquor deal between her son Michael and the mobsters on behalf of the Shelby family, but she also double-crossed Luca.

She pretended to give up Tommy in exchange for Michael to the Changrettas, but it was a concocted ruse, and the Shelbies were able to kill Luca with the support of the American mobsters.

In Peaky Blinders Season 4, Tommy managed to neutralize one of the strongest enemies of his life, thanks to Aunt Polly's scheming and flawless execution.

Helen McCrory's Aunt Polly will be missed in The Immortal Man

After Murphy's Tommy Shelby, McCrory's Aunt Polly was one of the fiercest and most important characters in Peaky Blinders.

McCrory's tragic and untimely death in 2021 led the makers to write off Aunt Polly's character in the Season 6 premiere. While Aunt Polly's death is still the most tragic on the show, and led to a full-blown war between Tommy and Michael, the Shelby leader lost his voice of reason after Polly's demise.

With the show continuing with a sequel film, The Immortal Man, Helen McCrory's Aunt Polly would certainly have been a returning character if the actress were still alive.

While the show featured new faces in Season 6 and many new cast members are set to appear in The Immortal Man, Aunt Polly was Tommy's biggest ally, and nobody can replace the character and the actress' place in the crime series.

Tommy might be returning for another adventure in the upcoming Peaky Blinders film, but he would certainly have to fight alone without Polly by his side this time.
