HBO Max’s Hacks Season 4 concluded on May 29, 2025, with Jean Smart’s Deborah Vance and Hannah Einbinder’s Ava deciding to leave Los Angeles and go back home to Vegas to reset Deborah’s career. However, it is not as easy as it sounds due to Bob Lipka threatening to sue her over her 18-month non-compete contract after she quit her Late Night host job on air.

The Late Night show was Deborah’s long-time dream that she succeeded in achieving at the end of Season 3. The guests and glimpses of her show amid the other plotlines of the show were entertaining to watch and were a highlight of Hacks Season 4. Furthermore, it was one of the main storylines since Season 1, as Deborah wanted to achieve her dream of hosting a late-night show from the beginning of Hacks.

Therefore, it was hard to see her leaving behind a dream that she was finally able to achieve in Hacks Season 4. While it was the proper choice according to the current plot, the Late Night show's plot deserved a better finale than the one it received.

Deborah’s Late Night show ended too early in Hacks Season 4

At the end of season 3, Deborah got the chance to host her Late Night show, a longtime dream of hers. Later, in Hacks Season 4, Deborah’s show became the number 1 late-night show, breaking many records and making history as the first woman hosting a late-night show.

However, in season 4, we found Deborah and Ava back to their earlier rapport as they began feuding with each other again. Mostly due to Deborah’s change in personality and treating the people around her cruelly, for instance, her treatment of Winnie. This was one of the reasons Ava began to suspect Deborah was experiencing a power trip.

Later, she accidentally leaks information about their next guest, the controversial Ethan Sommers, due to which Bob asks Deborah to fire Ava. In episode 9 of Hacks Season 4, Deborah finally comes to terms with her behavior toward the people due to whom she got a chance to achieve her dream as a late-night show host.

She apologizes to Jimmy for pushing him to his extreme limit and also decides not to fire Ava but to quit the late-night gig altogether. Although the decision was right and it's good to see Deborah sticking to her morals and not giving up her friends for the job, the late-night show shouldn’t have ended this early.

Deborah wanted to host her own show from the beginning of Hacks, and she and Ava have been trying to make this dream of hers real and have been working on it for three seasons. Therefore, the end of her late-night career, being exclusive to only one season, was upsetting to see. Moreover, the bits and pieces of the late-night show that were depicted on Hacks Season 4 were one of the standout moments of the season.

As Deborah decides to go back to Las Vegas at the end of Hacks Season 4, it is not clear if she and Ava will try to achieve this dream again in Vegas or if it was the end of Deborah’s late-night gig, as Bob’s contract also stops her from doing anything related to late-night shows. Therefore, Deborah’s dream needed to be a part of at least another season before the abrupt end of the main storyline of Hacks.
