One of the most interesting characters in Squid Game Season 1 wasn’t a player in the deadly games, it was Detective Hwang Jun-ho. His storyline added mystery, tension, and a new point of view to the show.
While the players were trying to survive, Jun-ho was secretly investigating the people running the games. What made the story even more interesting was the twist that Front Man was his brother. After failing to stop the games in the first season and almost dying, Jun-ho returned in Season 2.
However, this time around, he did not make the same impact on the narrative as he did in the debut installment. In another failed attempt at stopping the games, he spent the entire season in search of the island, but repeatedly fell off the track. Now that Squid Game Season 3 is confirmed to conclude the show, it is now or never to do Jun-ho’s character justice.
Jun-ho needs to be back with a bang in Squid Game Season 3

If Jun-ho does not make any meaningful contribution to the narrative in Squid Game Season 3, the series will surely be throwing away one of its most layered and important characters.
Jun-ho was never just a background character. In Season 1, he went undercover as a guard and collected proof of the horrifying things happening on the island. He found out that the Front Man, who runs the Games, was actually his own missing brother, In-ho.
That twist added a deep emotional layer to the story. The moment In-ho shot Jun-ho and he fell into the ocean was shocking, but it didn’t feel like the end of his story. Fans were hopeful of his return in Squid Game Season 2, and while he did come back, his story was not as impactful.
In the sophomore season, Jun-ho teamed up with Gi-hun to put an end to the deadly games once and for all. However, the plan went awry as Gi-hun became a part of the games once again, while Jun-ho relied on a suspicious crew to find the island, which he did not succeed at.
It never felt like he was a part of the main storyline. While the death and the bloodshed in the games kept audiences on the edge of their seats, Jun-ho’s storyline was a snoozefest as he just wasn’t able to do anything meaningful.
That is precisely what Squid Game Season 3 needs to change. Thankfully, the final chapter’s teaser trailer gives us something to look forward to. We see Jun-ho on a beach, wearing scuba gear and carrying a gun. It seems like he is ready for a mission and might have finally reached the island where the games are happening.
The third season needs to bring him back to the forefront and connect him to the core story. Jun-ho also knows more about the games than almost anyone else. His knowledge could be key to helping Gi-hun take down the entire operation. His relationship with his brother could add further drama to the plot.
Squid Game Season 3 is the last chance to wrap up all the storylines, and Jun-ho has spent enough time on the sidelines. If the show ignores him or again gives him a small role in the final season, it will not only hurt the plot but will also leave fans disappointed.
Squid Game Season 3 will premiere on Netflix on June 27, 2025.
