Few shows have mastered the art of emotional storytelling like Starz's Outlander. The 2014 historical fantasy series is an adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's books, following an English nurse in the 1920s who accidentally time-travels to 18th-century Scotland.

While the premise of Outlander is fantastical, it carries an emotional and authentic tale filled with human experiences of love and loss at its heart. For every breathtaking reunion between Claire and Jamie Fraser, there's a gut-wrenching loss that reminds viewers just how fragile happiness can be in their tumultuous world. Over the years, the show has given fans countless moments of joy and triumph, but it has also left them reeling from some of the most painful deaths in television history.

As the show comes to an epic conclusion with Outlander Season 8, let's look at the 5 most tragic deaths in Outlander that left fans in tears.

Here are the Top 5 most tragic deaths in Outlander

1) Murtagh Fitzgibbons

While fans often have extreme reactions when an adaptation makes monumental changes to a book, the creative decision to delay Murtagh's death was a welcome change. This was especially true because he is a beloved character. According to Gabaldon's books, Murtagh died in the Battle of Culloden, but he survived and was reunited with Jamie in Starz's Outlander.

However, his sudden death in Season 5 is still the most tragic in the series. Murtagh died in Jamie's arms after being shot in the back. After his parents' deaths, Murtagh was Jamie's only family, and his death was especially hard on both Jamie and Claire. While Jamie even asked Claire to save his godfather, nothing could be done for him.

2) Frank Randall

This might be an unusual choice because Outlander fans are divided in their opinions about Frank. However, he was one of the main cast members when the series initially premiered on Starz. While Claire was destined to meet Jamie, Frank was a supportive husband who accepted her and Jamie's child when she returned to him from the past.

Frank was tragically killed in Season 3 in a car accident, moments before a heated argument with Claire about their divorce, during which she discovered his mistress. What makes Frank's death even sadder is that he was killed off-screen and not given the goodbye he deserved.

3) Faith Fraser

Claire went into early labor while trying to stop Jamie from fighting Black Jack Randall in a duel. While Jamie was arrested and imprisoned, Claire delivered a stillborn daughter named Faith. Even though the character never made an official appearance in the show, it remains one of the most tragic deaths and the saddest moments for Claire as a mother.

Claire cradling her dead daughter for hours and later burying her with Jamie remains one of the most heartbreaking sequences in the show. While Season 7 teased that Faith might still be alive, Claire and Jamie remained separated from their daughter for years, and nothing can lessen that pain.

4) Dougal MacKenzie

Dougal was one of the most complicated characters in Outlander, sharing a complex relationship with Jamie and Claire, and his death was truly tragic. Dougal was a true Scotsman who loved his country beyond measure. This devotion led him to confront Jamie and Claire when he overheard that they were about to stop the Battle of Culloden by assassinating Prince Charles.

However, Jamie and Claire prevailed, and Dougal died at their hands. Despite his flaws, he was still Jamie's uncle and had even married him to Claire to protect her from Black Jack Randall.

5) Angus

Every Outlander fan will agree that the magic of the early seasons remains unmatched. The show vividly showcases 18th-century Highland life through characters like Murtagh, Dougal, Angus, and Rupert. Angus brought much-needed comic relief, keeping the show's tone refreshingly light.

However, Outlander lost some of its comedic charm when Angus was killed after the Battle of Prestonpans. Tragically, he survived the battle and was enjoying himself and making jokes when he suddenly collapsed due to internal bleeding caused by injuries sustained on the battlefield.

Outlander will return with its eighth and final season on Starz in early 2026.
