Abbott Elementary recently had its second crossover episode with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The episode was a laugh riot as the teachers crossed paths with the gang again.

Tyler James Williams, who plays Gregory in Abbott Elementary, has now talked about how the crossover brought out a new shade of the lead, Janine, that had not been seen in the show before.

In the special episode, Janine used a cuss word when Dee made advances towards Gregory. Tyler revealed that this particular moment showcased a possessive nature of Janine, which had not been explored earlier. He said in an interview with Variety:

“One of the most fun things to me is how she can get a little jealous at times, which is a color we just never thought we would see on her. This is another way to find out more about these characters — very similarly to what’s happening with Ava and O’Shon. Any relationship can crack open a character differently than anything else.”

Series creator and lead actress Quinta Brunson was also present during the interview. She talked about how she felt using slang for the first time as Janine. In the Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover, Janine called Dee a c*** after she tried to get close to Gregory. Opening up about the whole situation, Brunson said:

“It didn’t seem that jarring to me because it’s not like I don’t cuss — well, that word is just wild and British, but I just don’t … it’s not very American swearing — so, I just said it. I read my lines and did my job. So, it wasn’t until it aired that I saw it, and I was like ‘Yikes, that’s wild. There have been so many disappointed mothers in my inbox.”

Abbott Elementary will soon return with its fifth season, with all the main cast members reprising their roles. During the conversation, Tyler James Williams pointed out that in the story, the teachers choose to stick with the school year after year despite the hardships that they face:

“That’s such a big thing that kind of looms over every school year, that I think that people take for granted. We saw it with Ava’s firing this year: these people don’t need to stay in this school. Every year, they have to choose to stay here.”

The mockumentary sitcom tells the story of an underfunded public school where the teachers try their best to educate students despite a lack of resources. Apart from Quinta Brunson as Janine and Tyler James Williams as Gregory, the show stars Janelle James as Ava Coleman.

The cast also includes William Stanford Davis as Mr. Johnson, Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, and Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill.

Abbott Elementary Seasons 1 to 4, and its Always Sunny crossover episode, are streaming on Hulu.
