Lee Jun-ho's latest K-drama, Typhoon Family, goes back to the 1990s, specifically during 1997 year when South Korea had to deal with economic downfall. What's interesting about the show is that Lee plays the heir of a business again, just like he did in the previous K-drama King the Land, in which he starred alongside Yoona.
However, the story in this new K-drama is notably different as it takes viewers back in time and highlights the setbacks and struggles of the people affected by the IMF financial crisis. Unlike his father, Kang Tae-poong (played by Lee) knows nothing about business.
He belongs to the Orange Tribe (rich and careless youngsters) and spends most of his time in clubs and partying with friends. But this does not mean that Tae-poong doesn't have an emotional side. He owns a greenhouse where he escapes when hurt and always shows up to help his friends.
But this time, the damage is bigger than ever. Tae-poong has lost his father in the first episode, and now he must ensure that Typhoon Trading (their company) survives. The employees have been working for years, and they expect someone responsible to take authority.
A detailed recap of the entire premiere of Typhoon Family is just below.
Typhoon Family episode 1 recap: A glimpse into Typhoon Trading and its employees

Typhoon Family episode 1 is titled "The Season of Typhoon", which starts by introducing Kang Ji-yeong as the CEO of Typhoon Trading, a local and flourishing company whihc has survived 26 long years in the import business. The focus then shifts to other employees, including Cha Seon-taek, Ko Ma-jin, Song-jung, and more.
As the premiere introduces all key figures, we also meet Oh Mi-seon (played by Kim Min-ha). She's a bookkeeper and an important part of the company. What makes her strong is that Mi-seon isn't just doing a job, but also managing her studies.
She financially supports her grandmother and younger siblings while preparing for her college entrance exams. In contrast, her boss, Kang Tae-poong's son, leads a life full of privileges. At the age of 26, Tae-poong is affluent and playful and regularly spends his nights at clubs and his mornings surrounded by plants in a greenhouse.
Tae-poong is what Koreans in the 1990s referred to as the "Orange Tribe," the label they gave to fashionable youth who are unconcerned with money. However, he's not entirely shallow. Tae-poong loves plants and is even working on developing a new species of rose.
He knows that his father is mostly disappointed by his actions, but if he manages to create a whole new rose that's cheaper and nicer, Ji-yeog might recognize his talent. So, while he looks completely careless, Tae-poong is trying to satisfy his father.

Conflicts and unexpected meetings in Typhoon Family episode 1

The Typhoon Family premiere continues, and we learn that Tae-poong's carefree nature often lands him in trouble. His main adversary, Pyo Hyun-jun, likes to provoke Tae-poong, and while at the club, he starts throwing punches, while their other friends also join.
This encounter ends with everyone down at the police station. Tae-poong's father arrives angry and embarrassed and refuses to spring his son immediately. However, Pyo Hyun-jun's father, Pyo Bak-ho, is an old friend of Jin-yeong and helps to get everyone out.
Later, Tae-poong asks Ji-yeong for some money, which leads his father to slap him. This hurts Tae-poong, and he takes a train and escapes to his greenhouse. He lets the pain out and realizes how strained his relationship with his father is.
The next morning, Tae-poong takes a train for home, and while on the way, he sees Mi-seon. Tae-poong accidentally bumped into Mi-seon's shoulder as he couldn't sleep the whole night.
During the ride, small gestures in the first episode of Typhoon Family reveal their personalities: Mi-seon notices Tae-poong giving his seat to an elderly woman, while he curiously glances at her newspaper page showing fashion deals. Interestingly, neither of them knows about their connection with Typhoon Trading.
A turning point and heartbreak in Typhoon Family episode 1

As the story in the Typhon Family episode 1 moves forward, the trading company starts facing problems. Ji-yeong, looking to grow his business, makes a risky deal with an Italian client, which comes with an advance payment that is tied to Daebang Textile.
Mi-seon warns Jin-yeong privately that the deal is precarious and the profits can be eaten up by interest costs. But he disregards Mi-seon's concern. And later, a cheque from Gisang Chemical bounces, affecting the company's finances. All of Typhoon Trading's cash is in the Italian transaction, and Jin-yeong can't even pay his employees.
Despite the challenge and financial setback, the employees at Typhoon Trading remain loyal to Ji-yeong. They consider each other family and decide to tackle this problem together. As for Tae-poong, he gets into a trap set by Hyun-jun.
Hyun-jun humiliates Tae-poong over his family's struggle and Typhoon Trading's current situation. Before Tae-poong could respond, he learns that Ji-yeong had been hospitalized. He then rushes to the hospital to see what happened to his father.
However, Tae-poong arrived too late. The first episode of Typhoon Family concludes with the demise of Ji-yeong, leaving the company without a CEO and with big financial problems.
