Unaccustomed Earth: Sarayu Blue is the latest addition to the Netflix adaptation

As mentioned, American actress Sarayu Blue has joined Netflix’s adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri’s Unaccustomed Earth. Blue will play Ruma, a Bengali American mother who has a lot on her plate but still faces everything with a smile and a never-back-down attitude. The series will center on how she tries to balance her family’s needs with her career as an attorney.

As reported by Variety, Netflix describes her character as:

"A self-assured and ambitious Bengali American mother who is the steadfast breadwinner of her family. An accomplished attorney with uncompromising standards, she balances the chaos of a household full of dreamers and artists with unshakable practicality. Her warm smile masks the quiet strain of carrying more than her share, a truth few ever notice."

Unaccustomed Earth is said to be an eight-part series, and the synopsis of the Netflix adaptation reads as:

"An epic, soapy and culturally vibrant drama about a tight-knit Indian American community navigating love, desire and belonging. A scandalous affair is born, and new battle lines are drawn in this intensely interconnected immigrant community."

Netflix’s Unaccustomed Earth will be a love story about a forbidden romance between a married woman who reunites with her long-lost love. The series is set in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and features Freida Pinto and Sarayu Blue, along with popular Indian actor Indraneil Sengupta, Iyla Sundarsingh Mckaig, and Adi Roy.

The series is written by Madhuri Shekar and directed by Ritesh Batra, who is known for the BAFTA-nominated film, The Lunchbox, and will helm the first two episodes of the miniseries. Additionally, Lahiri will join the series as an executive producer alongside Erin Jontow, Madhuri Shekar, Ritesh Batra, and John Wells, whose previous work with Netflix and Warner Bros. includes popular shows such as UNTAMED and Maid.

A release date for the Netflix adaptation series has not yet been confirmed.
