Kirby, who has essayed the role of Sue Storm, a.k.a. Invisible Woman, in the MCU's freshest and most anticipated release, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, talked about Sue Storm's character. Vanessa Kirby, who at present is expecting a baby, talks about her understanding of Sue Storm both as a superhero and a mother, as she states:
“When this one came around, I was so genuinely moved by the fact that this was a woman who was pregnant and was a new mother, and also has these superpowers”
Let us find out more about what Vanessa Kirby talks about Sue Storm in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
"Her history is incredible", says Vanessa Kirby about Sue Storm in MCU's The Fantastic Four: First Steps
On the podcast Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz, Vanessa Kirby, who recently portrayed the character of Sue Storm in the MCU's latest The Fantastic Four: First Steps, talks about her character in detail.
Sue Storm, along with being a powerful superhero, is also a mother. So, Kirby took time to understand the balance between motherhood and the mighty responsibility the character carries all the while, as she states:
“It helped me ground it in something — to try and understand what it would be like to have both those things happening at the same time was a challenge, but I was grateful for that because it rooted it in this kind of domesticity, in this family and home, which made it easier.”
She also talked about how she landed in the role. In the podcast, she reveals that she was not typically cast in the film through an audition. Vanessa Kirby had only met the director, Matt Shakman, followed by meeting the producer, Kevin Feige.
The character of Sue Storm made Vanessa Kirby realize a lot of things. Sue Storm is the kind of woman who 'does it all,' right from being a superhero to a mother. Kirby, much like Sue Storm, is now going to become a mother as well. The actor further talks about her deep association with the character, as she is well-versed with the comic books that narrate Sue Storm's story.
Vanessa Kirby's portrayal of Sue Storm does not end here, as she will return as the iconic character in the MCU's forthcoming project, Doomsday. So, like how MCU tradition goes, a superhero character returns in several installments and does not end in just one film.
So, when Josh Horowitz asked her whether she had any tentativeness about such a long future association, The Crown actor mentioned:
“With this, I actually didn’t have that, and I’m surprised to say that,”
She further expresses her love for Sue Storm, as she also mentions the complexity as well as her rich character history throughout the MCU. She talks about how Sue Storm, who is otherwise saving the world, is also quietly grieving the loss as a mother:
“I think it was because I really liked her so much and because I’d read so many of the comics and she goes through so many different iterations. She becomes Malice, this really dark version of herself for quite a long time, and then she renames herself Invisible Woman having been called Invisible Girl and she goes off with Psycho-Man, like her history is incredible, so I felt like there’s so much there to even [explore] psychologically. I mean, she has a stillborn, and people don’t know that. She’s gone through a lot.”
Kirby also mentions the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps and her warm relationship with them. So, Vanessa Kirby is pretty much prepared for the long association with the MCU with this character, as she states:
“I knew I wouldn’t be without these three actors, and these three actors have genuinely become family, and I admired them so much, and I knew that we’re a four and the four in the comics are never separated, so I assumed that we’d be together, and that really helped ’cause then you’re not a lone ranger going to new, daunting environments. We've always kind of got each other. I mean, we've had that exactly with Avengers just now, just all being together in our group."
In the MCU, Sue Storm's character is considered a huge cultural force in terms of her superpowers and the portrayal of women superheroes. Force Fields and the power of becoming invisible are two of her most notable superpowers. The character made her debut in the world in 'The Fantastic Four' comic in the year 1961.
