Bridgerton Season 3 ended on a high note with the dramatic public reveal of Lady Whistledown, a Polin baby, and more.
In short, it ended on a hopeful and happy note for all except Cressida, who's probably on her way to her strict aunt's house in the countryside. Yet beneath all the glam and glitz, some characters often get overlooked, and among them is the Featheringtons' housekeeper, Mrs. Varley.
Mrs. Varley, played by Lorraine Ashbourne, is the thread that keeps the Featherington house together. She's an efficient problem solver, a great advisor, and as Varley so perfectly puts it,
"Of all the house staff in London, I must be the most experienced at doing more with less."
Additionally, let's not forget that she's an excellent handwriting forger. Remember when she copied Jack Featherington's signature on a document to ensure that the estate goes to the son of one of Portia's daughters? A true savior indeed!

Mrs. Varley is the MVP of Bridgerton Season 3
Mr. Varley deserves much more credit than she gets. She's not just the housekeeper for Featheringtons, she's the silent saviour for them, and here's why.
Firstly, she wholeheartedly supports Penelope throughout. In a house where she's barely appreciated, Mrs. Varley is the true girl's girl and her biggest ally. For instance, in Episode 5 of Bridgerton Season 3, Portia confronts Penelope about her engagement to Colin, pressing her on whether it's a love match or not. Colin steps in and defends Portia; it's Varley's expression that stands out. She absolutely can't hide her smile, and it says everything.
Also in Episode 8 of Bridgerton Season 3, when Penelope hands Varley a considerable amount for the Butterfly Ball, she smiles at her warmly. Her expression says a lot. It reflects how proud she is of Penelope and how deeply she respects the woman Penelope has become.
Secondly, she has always been Portia's biggest critic yet strongest supporter. She never sugarcoated the reality. When she had the option to leave the job at Featherington's and look for a better opportunity, she didn't. At this point, it feels like she considers the Featheringtons her family. She also offered constant support to Portia during the Jack Featherington scandal.
In Bridgerton Season 3, she often tricked Walter Dundas, the solicitor who was poking into Jack Featherington's matter. When Colin stood up for Penelope, it was Varley who helped Portia understand that her concerns weren't invalid, but rather that she should communicate her feelings to them more effectively.
Lastly, when Prudence and Phillips went absolutely bonkers about the butterfly ball, it was Varley who took the responsibility for arranging it. With the money that Penelope gave her, Varley made the best arrangements possible. Most importantly, she gave special attention to Prudence and Phillipa's wishes.
From the colorful ostrich feathers to the chandelier to the purple orchids to the eight-piece ensemble, it was the perfect Featharington ball. What stood out was Phillipa's butterfly surprise. When the hall just began to gossip about Penelope being Lady Whistledown, Phillipa uttered,
"Now Varley, the bugs"
Varley pulled a curtain, and several colorful butterflies flew out, catching the guests' attention. In the end, Varley chugs down a glass of wine. Well, she deserved it after all; she was the true MVP (Most Valuable Player) of Bridgerton season 3.
Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1 will drop on January 29, 2026.
