During its glorious run of 12 seasons, The Big Bang Theory introduced several characters and featured various guest actors. Apart from the stellar main cast, the show featured cameos by the likes of Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, and Stan Lee.
Another name that has often popped up while talking about the cast of TBBT is Lara Spencer. Some people have associated the journalist’s name with the sitcom, while others are still wondering whether she played a role in the show.
Well, no—Lara Spencer was not on The Big Bang Theory. The Good Morning America host’s name has been confused with Laura Spencer by some viewers. It was Laura Spencer who played the role of Emily Sweeney, Rajesh Koothrappali’s love interest, in the series.
Did Lara Spencer appear on The Big Bang Theory?
Lara Spencer did not appear on The Big Bang Theory, and the television journalist has nothing to do with the CBS sitcom. Since her name sounds similar to actress Laura Spencer, some people mistakenly mention the journalist’s name among the show’s cast members.
Lara is known for her work in journalism, not in acting. She is widely recognized as the former co-anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America. She has also worked as the producer of various game and lifestyle shows, including It’s Worth What?, I Brake for Yard Sales, and Flea Market Flip.
On the other hand, Laura Spencer is an actress who played Emily in The Big Bang Theory. She was introduced in the show in Season 7 and was promoted to series regular in Season 9. Her final appearance was in Season 10, when Raj broke up with her.
Emily was a dermatology resident at Huntington Hospital who met Raj through a dating app. After they began their relationship, Raj found out that Emily was a hardcore horror fan and had a dark side to her personality. Laura portrayed all these shades of the character brilliantly. The actress talked about her character in an interview with The Wrap in 2014 and said:
“I think it's hilarious that they decided to make her [like that]. I don't know if they had this idea all along, because when I was in the first couple of episodes there was no indication that I was at all strange.”
She added:
“So it was a total delight when they just threw in one of my first lines in last season, where I say something like, “I love cutting people with knives and I can do it legally with my job.” I was like, “Wait, am I kidding?” And then they kind of kept going with it so I'm starting to think maybe she wasn't kidding.”
Laura has also appeared in shows like Switched at Birth, Reservation Dogs, Grey's Anatomy, Bones, Jessie, and 2 Broke Girls. Her movie credits include A Christmas Kiss, 13 Minutes, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, Time Expired, and Mangus!
Hence, journalist Lara Spencer did not play any role on The Big Bang Theory, and the confusion around her appearance stems from the similarity of her name with actress Laura Spencer.
