Was Vecna really Stranger Things’ most haunting villain – or was it Billy all along?

Vecna makes his way into Stranger Things like a bad dream that fans can't seem to shake off. With twisted branch like limbs and a dark purpose, he seems like the ultimate bad guy.

But there's one thing fans can't stop debating: was Vecna truly the show's greatest villain, or did Billy Hargrove already claim that title?

Both characters terrorized Hawkins, but in very different ways. The monster might be more powerful, but Billy? Billy was deeply human, broken, and he left a mark that's harder for fans to forget.

The real question is, which one of the two characters lived rent free in your mind long after Seasons 2-4 ended?

Vecna had the power, but Billy had the pain

When it comes to pure terror, Vecna brings a chilling presence. His kills aren't just physical but rather they're drawn out and filled with psychological torment. Bones snap, eyes vanish, and he feeds on fear like it's second nature.

In a way, he was created to be the central threat, and his connection to the Upside Down gives him an edge no other villain in the show has. His story is filled with layers, and his ties to Eleven and the lab raise the bar for everyone.

But here's the thing: Vecna isn't human. He feels more like a symbol of evil than someone we can understand. Billy, on the other hand, is the kid we all knew. Angry, reckless, and sometimes terrifying, yes - but not born evil. His rage wasn't random. It came from somewhere real.

Abuse at home. A mother who left. A father who taught him strength through cruelty. That history made him dangerous, but it also made him tragic. The Upside Down monster was scary; but Billy was unsettling in a completely different way. And that's why some still say Billy was Stranger Things' best villain.

Billy wasn’t just a bully - he was a mirror to real life pain

Billy Hargrove didn't need monster powers to leave people shaken. His entrance in season 2 as Max's hostile stepbrother made him an instant threat. He drove too fast, fought too hard, and carried a quiet storm behind his eyes. What made Billy so unforgettable wasn't just his aggression.

It was how the show peeled back those layers. In season 3, we see the memories that shaped him: a soft moment on the beach with his mom, a terrified kid bracing himself against his father's fists. Suddenly, Billy wasn't just a villain but rather now he was a product of pain.

This human side made his spiral under the Mind Flayer's control even more intense. Unlike Vecna, who chose his darkness, Billy was dragged into it. Possessed, used, and turned into something worse than himself, he became a weapon. Still, he fought back.

And when he sacrificed himself to save Eleven, it wasn't just redemption; it was a glimpse of who he could've been. That's what makes his arc so haunting. The show didn't let him off the hook, but it asked us to look deeper. And that's what Stranger Things' best villain should do.

The legacy they leave behind is what truly defines them

Vecna is still out there. His survival keeps viewers on edge for what's to come in the final season. But while he's set to return, Billy's presence never really left. Max's grief, the silence that follows his name, and that heartbreaking vision Eleven had of his past? It all lingers.

Vecna may control the Upside Down, but Billy controls a space in the audience's memory that's harder to shake off and even in death, Billy casts a long shadow. Not because of his powers, but because of the moral messiness he represented. He was violent and cruel, but also vulnerable. He scared us, but he made us feel something.

Vecna might be Stranger Things' best villain in terms of all the horror, but Billy's story holds a kind of weight that cuts deeper. And maybe that's what makes Billy as a villain truly unforgettable.

Vecna brought in all of the nightmares, but Billy walked into Hawkins and brought the heartbreak. He reminded us that the scariest monsters aren't always from the Upside Down and that they can come from broken homes and real world trauma. And that's why, to many fans, Billy might still be Stranger Things' most haunting villain of all.
