NBC's long-running police procedural, Chicago P.D., concluded its Season 12 with an explosive finale that bid farewell to a character and also saw a happy wedding ceremony.

The finale, which aired on May 21, 2025, finally saw Burgess and Ruzek walk down the aisle for their wedding. While the finale ended before the actual ceremony, the couple did get their happily ever after.

With the show already being renewed for Season 13, fans are wondering if the new season will open with the couple's wedding ceremony or if the show will feature a time jump.

Talking with Screenrant, showrunner Gwen Sigan teased Chicago P.D. could likely have a time jump, however, nothing is confirmed as of yet:

''They're married, so we could either see it or we can jump to the future and see them happily married and see what they're up to. So we've got options.''

More on this in our story.

Chicago P.D. showrunner teases a potential time jump for Season 13

After a tumultuous relationship and a will-they-won't-they romance, the Chicago P.D. Season 12 finale finally saw Burgess and Ruzek walk down the aisle for their wedding ceremony. While we do see them in their wedding dress and glimpse of a ceremony, the finale ends without actually showing a wedding.

Burgess and Ruzek finally tying the knot was a win for the couple, but the fans would like to see their wedding ceremony. Showrunner Gwen Sigan teases (via ScreenRant) if we would get a peek at the ceremony in the Season 13 premiere:

''You know what? We haven't gotten back in the room yet. So I think that all of those are options. In my mind, yes, the whole wedding played out.''

While seeing the ceremony would be nice, Season 13 could also have a time jump and see the couple happily married, as Sigan teased:

''There are so many interesting ways to play a married couple on television and to show that relationship and what that relationship is like. Hopefully, we get the chance to explore all of that.''

The Chicago P.D. Season 12 finale also bid farewell to a character

While the Chicago P.D. Season 12 finale ended on a happy note, it also saw a character's death. However, it was not a fan-favorite character, instead an antagonist that had made Voight's life hell throughout the season.

The season 12 finale saw Shawn Hatosy's Deputy Chief Charlie Reid's death, after Voight practically served him on a platter to Renny Otero. While Voight did not pull the trigger, he confirms to Chapman that he told Renny about Reid's involvement in his father's death and also tipped him about the Chief's whereabouts.

Chicago P.D. Season 12 was building on the Reid and Voight's animosity and it was clear that the latter is becoming increasingly impatient to end his Chief's illegal management. When he got a chance to get rid of him, he finally orchestrated his death, likely ruining his future with Chapman.

While Reid finally dies, he says this to Voight in his final moments:

"You're worse than me.''

And while Voight did not commit any crime, as Chapman said, he did 'sanctioned' his death. Talking about how Reid's final words might affect Voight in Chicago P.D. Season 13, Sigan discussed with NBC Insider:

"I think Voight does not see himself as the same. I think that that question is gonna keep coming up in his subconscious. I don’t think that it’s gonna really leave him. I think it will have an impact, but I think he believes what he did was for the betterment of his team, the city, everybody involved."
