Brilliant Minds Season 2 has premiered on NBC, continuing the journey of Dr. Oliver Wolf and his team. The show is based on author and neurologist Oliver Sacks’ books and revolves around the physician as he comes across some intriguing medical cases.

Apart from treating patients who have some rare illnesses, Oliver also has to struggle with personal problems. He had a troubled childhood and thought his father was dead, until he returned to his life more than thirty years later in Season 1.

One important theme in the medical drama is Oliver dealing with his traumas. Actor Zachary Quinto, who plays the lead, has now revealed that the theme will be explored further in Brilliant Minds Season 2. He said in a recent interview with Collider:

“I think it’s something that, in one way or another, he’ll have to deal with. That’s part of the seeds that are being sprinkled around what happens later in the season. Without giving too much away, we can’t run from the past that defines us, as much as we might want to.”

Dr. Oliver Wolf got the shock of his life in the first season of the show when he found out his father, Noah Wolf, who was presumed dead for three decades, was actually alive. As Noah reenters his life, Oliver finds it difficult to connect or reconcile with him after years of abandonment. Talking about how the relationship will pan out in Brilliant Minds Season 2, Zachary Quinto said in the interview:

“I feel like that sense of abandonment and that void that is created by an experience such as Oliver has had is incredibly difficult to reconcile or to heal. To fill that void can be a life’s work, and I think Oliver is really engaged in that from the beginning of the season. How successful he’s able to do it, I think remains to be seen.”

The actor added that the choices made by Oliver’s parents, Noah and Muriel, in his childhood continue to have repercussions now, and he still has not been able to move on from that trauma:

“Noah and Muriel, to a certain extent, really did a number on this guy with the decisions that they made in his childhood. Those were indelible, irrevocable decisions that they made without his participation. It’s pretty traumatic. Understandably, Oliver is trying to navigate that, and some days are better than others.”

Meanwhile, Oliver continues to work on some eccentric medical cases this season. He has already encountered patients with Alien Hand Syndrome and delusions in the first two episodes.

Apart from Zachary Quinto, Brilliant Minds Season 2 stars Mandy Patinkin as Noah Wolf, Donna Murphy as Muriel Landon, Tamberla Perry as Carol Pierce, Teddy Sears as Josh Nichols, Alex MacNicoll as Van Markus, Ashleigh LaThrop as Ericka Kinney, and Spence Moore II as Jacob Nash.
