Prime Video’s We Were Liars invites viewers to Beechwood Island, a private paradise where the wealthy Sinclair clan gathers every summer. On one disastrous night of teenage rebellion, their dream turned into a nightmare.
Much of the publicity around the series has focused on its shocking twist: heroine Cadence eventually remembers that she and her cousins accidentally killed three family members in a mansion fire of their own making. Yet the show hides another heartbreak that hits just as hard: the fate of the family’s two golden retrievers.
Cadence, Johnny, Mirren, and Gat planned their "symbolic" arson to snap their quarrelling parents out of a toxic inheritance feud. However, they forgot about Fatima and Prince Philip, the playful dogs locked downstairs to keep them calm during dinner.
Moments after the blaze begins, Cadence hears frantic barking and rushes back inside, only to be driven out by smoke and flames. The goldens never escape, and their off-screen deaths become a quiet but devastating echo of the tragedy that defines the story.

We Were Liars featured two adorable golden retrievers: Fatima & Prince Philip

In E. Lockhart’s original novel, and Prime Video's We Were Liars, Fatima and Prince Philip aren’t just background pets. These two golden retrievers run around the tennis courts, steal food during picnics, and happily chase tennis balls with the Liars, bringing some lightness to the atmosphere.
Their names reflect the Sinclair sisters’ quirky habit of bestowing grand titles on animals. Fatima is named after a Muslim historical figure, and Prince Philip after British royalty, which serves as a quiet joke about how the family turns even animals into status symbols.
In We Were Liars, the dogs show up in a few early episodes, walking with Cadence on the beach or relaxing around her grandfather’s mansion. Their playful, relaxed presence adds to the illusion that everything on the island is perfect.
But underneath that surface, there’s still emotional distance in the family. Even the dogs are sometimes locked away just so the adults can keep things looking proper at dinner, hinting early on that this focus on appearances won’t last.

A fire in Prime Video's We Were Liars sealed the dogs' fate
As seen in We Were Liars, the fire at Clairmont starts as a protest, with each of the Liars setting a floor and planning to meet later at the dock. Cadence gets out first but hears the dogs crying from a locked room.
She runs back to save them, but the fire is too strong. As she escapes to the beach, a gas explosion hits, knocking her out cold. While everyone talks about the deaths of Johnny, Mirren, and Gat, the loss of the dogs leaves a deep mark on Cadence, too.
When her memories come back, she remembers them waiting by the hot door, still hopeful, as the smoke poured in. It’s a heartbreaking moment that reminds viewers that even the innocent weren’t spared in the mess the Sinclairs created in We Were Liars.
