Maggie Q's Bosch spin-off series premiered an intense Season 1 on Amazon Prime Video, and fans are already anticipating Ballard Season 2.
Teased in the Bosch: Legacy series finale, actress Maggie Q debuted as Detective Renée Ballard in Ballard Season 1 on July 9, 2025. Ballard is another one of the characters from Michael Connelly's novel series, hailing from the same literary universe as Harry Bosch.
Ballard Season 1 saw Renee command the cold cases unit in the Robbery-Homicide Division, where she investigated the murder of Councilperson Jake Pearlman's sister with her team of officers.
While she successfully caught the killer in Season 1, the finale saw the shocking murder of Robert Olivas, following which Renee was arrested.
While Amazon Prime Video has yet to renew Ballard Season 2, work on the sophomore season has already begun, as Q revealed via The Hollywood Reporter.
''We have a writers room, and they’ve been writing away. The arc for the second season is very exciting.''
More on this in our story.
Maggie Q and the cast are hopeful for Ballard Season 2
While Maggie Q's latest crime series is already leading Amazon Prime Video's Top 10 charts in many countries, nothing can be said about Ballard Season 2. However, Q and the cast seem hopeful, and with the writer's room already set for another season, we might get to see Renee Ballard in action again.
While Q seems hopeful, the disappointing cancellation of both Bosch and Bosch: Legacy has prepared her for the worst, as she discussed with The Hollywood Reporter.
''I have no sense. This industry is not what it was before. It’s barely recognizable to me, and shows are so expendable. They can throw out a show in two seconds, and it doesn’t make a ton of difference that whole worlds and livelihoods are at stake. Studios always have options.''
However, since Ballard Season 2 has already set up a writer's room, the actress seems hopeful, as she discussed in an interview with Variety.
''But the good news is that we are breaking the second season, which is very exciting.''
Ballard Season 2 needs to address many questions
While Maggie Q and her team successfully made the connection between Sarah Pearlman's murders and the other cold cases and tracked down the Season 1 killer, the finale ends on a cliffhanger.
The Season 1 finale saw Renee threaten Olivas after all the charges against him were dropped by the DA. However, moments after Renee leaves Olivas' house (after threatening him), he is found murdered, setting up an exciting Ballard Season 2.
In addition to the Olivas' murder mystery, Ballard Season 2 will also feature how Renee will clear her name, as the evidence (and motive) surely points in her direction as of now.
Discussing Olivas' murder mystery for Ballard Season 2, Q revealed to Variety,
''I think we’re going to dig not too far because the whole first season was about Olivas, but in the beginning of the second season, we’re really going to reveal really how dirty this guy was. We’re going to reveal who was behind his killing right away, which is going to be great because we can’t keep Ballard in jail...''
Olivas' murder also poses many difficulties for Ballard, as it remains to be seen whether other police officers can still be charged with conspiracy without his testimony against them. If/when renewed, the sophomore season will likely address these burning questions after Season 1.
