House of the Dragon Season 3, the prequel series of Game of Thrones, is currently under production. The filming, which began in March of this year, is expected to continue for a while. But that doesn't mean that we don't know what the upcoming season of House of the Dragon will be about. The season 2 finale set up the events of the upcoming third season, which will follow the first leg of the Targaryen Civil War.

Ryan Condal, the showrunner for House of the Dragon Seasons 2 and 3, teased what we can expect from the upcoming season of the series. He did so during an interview with Gold Derby, where he promised that House of the Dragon Season 3 will feature not one but four key book events. Furthermore, the showrunner promised that the third season includes an "unconventional" episode.

What did Ryan Condal say about House of the Dragon Season 3?

As mentioned above, showrunner Condal was interviewed by Gold Derby on March 6, 2025. There, he went into extensive detail about the upcoming season, which, at that time, was scheduled to begin filming soon. Confirming that the writing for House of the Dragon Season 3 was completed and the production was scheduled to begin "in a couple of weeks", Condal said:

"As the actors embody the characters, it actually becomes much easier to write in a more interesting way, because you get to know everybody really well. For Season 3, there's much more shape and depth to it right out of the gate, because you're writing for people you know. There are some major new characters this season, but 85 percent of them, we already knew who they were, and it just makes it much more rewarding to write."

After this, he further teased what we can expect from House of the Dragon Season 3:

"Season 2 is huge. Season 3 is huger, in many ways. There are, by my quick count on stage, four major events from the book that we get to adapt and realize in three dimensions in this season. That's really exciting on a scope-and-scale perspective, and I think it's the thing the show does really well. The things that we're building are mind-boggling. But what I'm most excited about from a dramatic perspective is that we got to have a little fun this season, and there's a conceptual episode, meaning that it isn't in the traditional vernacular of what we've laid out as the structure of a House of the Dragon episode. It's very character-driven, and I think it's really great and I'm really excited to see it rendered."

While House of the Dragon Season 3 promises to feature brutal battles, the episode he hyped was the "conceptual episode", which would take a break from the brutal battles between the Targaryen factions and be more introspective.

Speculating what the "conceptual episode" is about?

We already know that House of the Dragon Season 3 will have more battles than the second season, which was mostly about both sides of the Targaryen factions building their alliances. But the one episode Condal hyped up was the one that would not focus on the battles and politics. Thus, chances are that the episode might be from the perspective of Daeron Targaryen.

Daeron was briefly mentioned in the second episode as the young son of Viserys and Alicent, who is in Oldtown, far away from King’s Landing. Daeron being the focus of this episode might be a prudent way to introduce the character in the series. If the episode is not focusing on him, it could be about:

  • An episode narrated by multiple characters
  • One from Helaena Targaryen's perspective
  • It may follow the common Westerosi people suffering under the civil war

As of now, House of the Dragon Season 3 doesn't have a release date.
