Homeland remains one of the most-liked TV shows, focusing on the CIA officers on missions and protecting the nation's security. At the center of the story is Carrie Mathison, a smart and dedicated CIA officer who also lives with bipolar disorder.
This condition often creates trouble in her work, but Carrie tries her best to fulfill all her duties. As the show begins, a U.S. Marine named Nicholas Brody is rescued from a terrorist group, and after his return after many years, people believe he's a true hero.
However, Carrie doesn't fully trust Brody as she believes that the group might have brainwashed him, and now he can be a threat to the country. And this suspicion becomes a key plot in the entire series until Brody meets his end.
As seen in Homeland Season 3, Nicholas Brody is publicly hanged to death in Tehran, Iran in the Season finale, titled "The Star". What makes it even more chilling is that the entire crowd near him witnessed his brutal death.
What happened to Nicholas Brody in Homeland? Explained
The character arc of Nicholas Brody ends in Homeland with the conclusion of one of the series' most tragic and critical developments. By season 3, Brody has transformed from a heroic figure who dedicated his life to humanity to a man embroiled in the political issues of Washington D.C.
He was betrayed by those he trusted and faced with some of the toughest choices. After being wrongly accused of blowing up the CIA Headquarters, Brody had become one of the most sought-after fugitives in the world.
While Brody was not responsible for the bombing, the world, including the CIA, has blamed him and as a result, he was forced to go into hiding and ultimately fled to Venezuela. After capturing Brody, the CIA presented him with one final opportunity for redemption.
He was offered a dangerous assignment that would take him to Iran to assassinate Major General Danesh Akbari, the highest-ranking commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. The purpose of this operation was not only for vengeance but to help a CIA operative, Majid Javadi, assume Akbari's position in the Iranian hierarchy via covert means.
In Season 3 of Homeland, Brody enters Iran seeking political asylum to get into Iran. When the time comes for Brody to kill Akbari, he does so, but not in the manner he was instructed.
He is unable to poison Akbari as originally planned and instead kills him by overpowering him and strangling him to death. Despite the successful completion of the mission, the U.S. Government walked away from Brody.
It did not offer to pull him out or protect him. After being abandoned by the U.S. government, Brody was captured by Iranian authorities, charged with treason. In the Homeland Season 3 finale, Brody is executed by hanging in Tehran.
Following his death, Carrie works in places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Germany, and the United States. She continues to face dangerous situations like secret political deals, foreign spies, and election-related conspiracies.
