Severance loves to surprise its viewers with strange symbols and even stranger characters. These characters became the hot topic of discussion as soon as they appeared on screen. But contrary to that, Dylan seemed like the most human character in the beginning. And yet, he has now become one of the characters people talk about the most.

When you watch the show, you see him as the laidback and funny guy in MDR. But the more time you spend with him, the more you see how much heart he has. The first season shows you that he is a worker inside Lumon, but is a man with a loving family outside. That detail becomes very important later.

The series uses Dylan's character to explore how people split themselves to survive work. And that gives his story a lot of weight. By the time we reach the end of the second season, Severance turns him into one of the most emotional pieces of the puzzle.

You can also feel how Severance builds tension around Dylan’s choices. At first he enjoys the little Lumon perks and acts like the guy who jokes about everything. But he is also scared and confused under the surface. In Season 2, you see how different he is when he learns more about his own life outside and about the people Lumon has hurt.

Read on to know more.

Severance shows Dylan as someone who starts off as the funny guy on the severed floor. But his story slowly becomes very emotional. Inside Lumon, his innie only knows work life. So he behaves like someone who wants simple comfort and connection. He has a playful heart. He makes office perks feel like treasures.

In the outside world, Dylan is a father who carries the weight of real life. He worries about his responsibilities. He deals with stress in a way the innie never has to. This outie version of Dylan also gets fired because of the mess surrounding Lumon. That loss affects him. The show makes it clear that his outie has lived a harder life and that changes the way he sees the world.

The innie and outie are connected, but their experiences shape them differently. The innie feels more open and hopeful. The outie feels more tired and unsure. Watching these two sides helps you understand why Dylan becomes such an important part of the story. Severance uses this contrast to explore what a person becomes when two halves of their life do not talk to each other.

The final part of Dylan’s journey shows how much he has grown. His innie wants something much deeper. He wants safety. He wants truth. He wants control over his own life. He understands that Lumon has hurt people around him and he does not want to be trapped in that system anymore.

Dylan’s true nature in Severance comes out when he chooses to stay back at Lumon during the overtime contingency so that Mark, Helly, and Irving can experience the outside world as innies. Even though he is the one who longs the most to meet his kids. That choice shows how selfless and protective he is, because he faces Milchick alone while the others get their chance at freedom.

Dylan ends Severance Season 2 in a very emotional place. When he is allowed to meet his outie's wife, he falls for her (Gretchen) and creates a ring from the little items at work. But she rejects him for obvious reasons and that hits him hard. He then submits a resignation request. But instead of disappearing like he expected, he finds himself back on the severed floor.

He feels confused until he is given a letter from his outie. He first sounds angry but then opens up about how he really feels. The outie tells him that he understands why Gretchen cared for him and admits that the innie is stronger and more driven than he ever was. The outie has been lost in life for a long time, going from job to job without much hope or direction. So seeing his innie fight for love and connection inspires him.

He decides to cancel the resignation because he wants to hold on to the part of himself that still believes in something. Even though Dylan is now separated from Irving and the rest of MDR, and his relationship with Gretchen has ended for good, he is not without purpose. The letter hints that his innie has changed his outie’s life in ways that neither of them expected. And this sets up a new chapter for him in Severance Season 3 that's open and full of possibilities.
