Nathan's time in Lakeview and his digital afterlife came to a bittersweet conclusion in Amazon Prime Video's Upload Season 4. By the end of this sci-fi series, both the real and clone Nathans had lived their respective endings with Nora and Ingrid.
Firstly, the digital Nathan, a second version of the character who was created after Betta overtook Lakeview, finally got his happy ending with Ingrid. Thanks to Luke's sacrifice, Aleesha and Ingrid managed to upload their AI and defeat the rogue AI that wanted to delete all of Lakeview's data. At last, Ingrid managed to download the digital Nathan into the real body she had prepared for him. Ingrid and Digital Nathan ended the show with a baby on the way and became immensely famous as a power couple.
As for the real Nathan, he managed to break out of Betta and reunited with Nora in Upload Season 4. Nora and real Nathan's ending was more complicated and emotional, but the couple did get their happy ending, unconventionally. After being subjected to multiple uploads at Betta, the show ends with Nathan's physical death.
Here's what happened to Nathan in Upload Season 4.
Nathan and Nora's bittersweet reunion in Upload Season 4
Upload Season 4 was a roller coaster ride of emotions for Nora, who finally met the real Nathan (in flesh) for the first time. While Nathan's survival from Betta was shocking for Nora, viewers somehow knew that Nathan would eventually survive, until he didn't in the finale.
Nora and Nathan make up for lost time by spending some quality time together, until Nathan realizes that his real body is failing him. The 150+ uploads his body went through at Betta have somehow inflamed his neural pathways, and he has little time left on Earth. While the doctors reveal that Nathan could die soon, they suggest that they visit a 'Midtown Healer' who can perform miracles.
Nathan and Nora's hunt for the healer in Upload Season 4 bring them to an AI guy from Lakeview. While he is an established tech genius, even he reveals that nothing can be done for Nathan's real body and advises Nora to become his Angel one last time in his final journey. While the couple is devastated by this news, they decide to make the most of their time left in Upload Season 4.
An emotional goodbye, but with a twist
Nathan apologizes to Nora in the finale of Upload Season 4, for putting her through a devastating time because of his illness. When Nathan expresses his regret that they could not marry or live the life they envisioned, Nora conjures up a virtual reality for both of them through a VR simulation she used when Nathan was at Betta
Upload Season 4 featured an emotional and beautiful montage of Nora and Nathan marrying in their virtual reality, walking hand in hand in Montreal. They sit on a bench together, wishing happy birthdays, happy new year, mornings, nights, and possibly everything they can think of. Nathan says that while they have little to no time together, the couple should always cherish their last moment together and make up for the lost time.
With a final wish to Nora in Upload Season 4, Nathan finally dies in the real world and supposedly in the simulation too, Nathan's final words to Nora:
"Don’t wait for me… Don’t put your life on hold. Don’t stay in your room inside a headset. Be happy...You don’t have to be sad or feel like I missed out on anything. I had everything. Everything I ever was, I saved it for you. You are my angel, Nora, the love of my life… This one and the next one and the one after."
With these words, Nathan vanishes from the real world, leaving Nora teary-eyed.
However, the final moments of Upload Season 4 featured Nora sitting outside a coffee shop, fiddling with the ring Nathan gave to her during their wedding. It looks like some time has passed since Nathan's death, and Nora receives a notification alert on her iPad, with the words "NATHAN BROWN SCAN 2" appearing on the screen, and the show ends.
The final moment of Season 4 suggests that some digital form of real Nathan (or his memories) managed to survive and is now available to download. While Nathan died in the real world, Nora managed to forge a digital connection with him in the series' end.
