Derek Haas' latest crime thriller, Countdown, starring Jensen Ackles, kicked off on June 25, and the Prime Video show is now the talk of the town. The plot of Countdown unfolds with a Homeland Security officer's homicide while he is on duty, thereby prompting the FBI to gather a team/task force of highly-trained officials hailing from different departments.

As LAPD detective and undercover agent Mark (played by Ackles) works the case with his team (led by FBI Special Agent Blythe), they start unearthing several names. Borys Volchek (played by Bogdan Yasinski) turns out to be the most prominent villain, who seemingly has fatal plans for the United States.

The moles inside the department bring Mark and his team to a situation where they suspect a potential nuclear threat. And Volchek might be the one directly related to the attack (his connections to a regional cartel are eventually intercepted by the team). So, who exactly is this Borys Volchek, and what are his motives? Let's find out more.

Who is Borys Volchek in Countdown, and what do we know about his back story? Details explored

The part Borys Volchek has been played by Bosch: Legacy star Bogdan Yasinski. With the way things have been till Countdown Episode 3, it seems that he is the main antagonist who considers the USA his biggest enemy.

The name Borys Volchek comes up for the first time in Countdown Episode 2, even though fans have been witnessing glimpses of the potential villain's backstory since the show's premiere. He is a Belarusian citizen who works at the country's Defence Ministry, and as it appears, he is quite a bright mind when it comes to science, technology, and engineering.

However, his skill set stretches beyond the confines of office/table work, thanks to his years of service in the army (Transportation Corps to be precise). Countdown offers a sneak peek of Volchek's backstory (from 2008) to the audience, where a new name is revealed: Anton, Volchek's brother.

As we see in Countdown Episode 2, Volchek gets himself involved with an unnamed American character over an agricultural deal that could have jeopardized Belarus' national security. However, Anton takes the money (bribe) from the American but messes up with the data he provides to protect his country.

When the unidentified American realizes the same, he starts to threaten Anton for the money he owes him (80,000 Rubles precisely), and thus the latter seeks help from his brother Volchek. As Volchek appears in the picture, he is asked for access to confidential emails from his boss's office—a matter that could ignite a national threat. The American even threatens to kill Anton if his orders are not followed.

Volchek somehow manages to get the data that was demanded, and when he comes back to his place, we witness Anton lying on his couch, all drunk. Thereafter, a short conversation between the two brothers throws flashbacks from their family's past, and it is revealed that Anton could never prove himself worthy of anything. Moments later, a gunshot is heard, and Volchek rushes to the bathroom to find that his brother has shot himself to death.

Enraged and heartbroken by the incident, Volchek meets up with the American to complete the deal he had made. He does provide him the data that was asked for, but engineers it into an explosive-studded hard disk. As seen in Countdown Episode 2, the moment the data transfer is about to complete, the Americans' place blows up—an act of revenge!

As the story progresses, it is eventually revealed that Borys Volchek is a genius diplomat with an army background and extensive engineering experience. Also, after Mark and his team ambush Pier 31 at the port in LA to intercept the smugglers, Detective Keyonte Bell spots radioactive material using a detector.

Following this revelation and clubbing it with the flashbacks we see in Countdown Episode 2, it becomes evident that Volchek is planning to carry out a nuclear terror strike on Los Angeles. His connections in public affairs probably helped him to enter American soil with radioactive substances meant to deploy a nuclear weapon big enough to create a massacre like Chernobyl.

Moreover, the way Javi Lopez's car is blown up (after Mark and Oliveras complete his drug run as promised), it appears to be exactly the same way Volchek had killed The American, confirming the fact that he/or his shadow is already on US soil. Volchek is a bold character with a cold outlook and a genius mind.

His plot against America probably originated from the untimely death of his brother (who got himself entangled in a nasty deal). Furthermore, the Countdown Episode has revealed a sneak peek into some engineering blueprints that Volchek possesses, and it looks like a nuclear weapon is on the go already.

From the murder of a US customs officer, the whole series spirals down a path of incidents that bring to the forefront a matter of national crisis. Now, Mark and his team have the responsibility to gather all the intel they have to try to stop Volchek before he deploys his deadly creation.

Moreover, Mark is under the stress of his brain tumor, which is eventually slowing him down. But thanks to an able team comprising members like Oliveras, Bell, Finau, and Shepherd, all hands are on deck! So it yet remains to be seen how Mark saves his nation from Volchek before the clock runs out for him.
