The fourth episode of The Last of Us Season 2, which has yet to be officially titled, will air on HBO on May 4, 2025.
This upcoming episode is set to be more action-packed than the third one, as the already released preview teased Ellie and Dina being surrounded by both human and infected enemies at one point in the fourth episode of this season.
The previous episode was more of a breather after losing Joel, but the largely uneventful episode doesn't mean that "The Path", the third episode of The Last of Us Season 2, wasn't important. We, as viewers, needed a bit of a break after the heartbreaking second episode in which we lost Pedro Pascal's Joel.
The mourning period for Tommy and Ellie in the game is short, but the show opts for a longer mourning period of three months. Neil Druckmann, the co-showrunner of The Last of Us Season 2, touched upon the time jump in the third episode's aftershow:
"I love episode 3. In the game after Joel dies, because the mechanics of the game are very action-oriented, the mourning period is relatively short. Here, we can take almost an entire episode and really feel the loss of this character."
Based on how episode 3 played out, we as viewers can feel the absence of Joel throughout the entire runtime of the entire episode. But the upcoming episode will push Ellie towards a brutal path of revenge. Thus, the third episode serves as a break for the viewers, where we feel assured that our characters are not in mortal danger in this episode.

What can we expect from The Last of Us Season 2 episode 4?
HBO released the preview for the fourth The Last of Us Season 2 which teased an important character from the second game: Isaac Dixon. Dixon is the ruthless leader of the WLF/Washington Liberation Front, i.e., the group Abby and her co-conspirators are a part of. He will be played by Jeffrey Wright, the actor who played the same role in the game.
In The Last of Us Part II, Isaac is introduced as the leader of the WLF, who formed the group to fight the oppressive FEDRA rule. Not much is known about his past, but Wright, in a November 2024 TVLine interview, teased a potential backstory for the character:
“People have asked… whether we’ll get a little bit of a backstory about Isaac? We might. It might not be pretty.”
