Abby’s new reality post-Joel is far from peaceful in The Last of Us Season 2
Abby’s journey in The Last of Us doesn’t just come to an end with Joel’s death—it merely only begins there. Following the ruthless act in Season 2’s 2nd episode, she vanishes from the story, but her next steps are well-known to fans who have previously played the video game.
The Last of Us Part II gives the fans insight into her direction for where she goes further on in the story: she goes back to Seattle, joins the ranks of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) again, all between the increasing war against the Seraphites.
The Seattle location in The Last of Us becomes something really important here, a war-torn area that in a way reflects the emotional wreckage that Abby carries along with her.
Her narrative only moves when Owen, her ex, disappears. Resolute enough to go out and look for him, Abby takes herself on a mission that eventually leads to her being apprehended by the Seraphites.
This roundabout way introduces the fans to characters named Yara and Lev—siblings who were thrown out and abandoned by their cult-ish faction.
With their help, Abby not only survives but also starts to think about the sides of this dispute.
This transformation as an individual doesn’t really allow her or give her the space to let go of her past, but it surely gives her a dimension that goes above and beyond just revenge.
The Last of Us utilizes this time frame to somewhat humanize Abby, letting the audience see that guilt, persistence, and relationships all play an important part in curating what is to come next.
Even if Ellie hasn’t caught up with Abby yet, she isn’t exactly living in secrecy—she’s just in an extremely different type of arena.
The Aquarium and Ellie’s looming pursuit
As The Last of Us Season 2 moves on, the question of Abby’s location moves towards some answers.
Episode 5 ends with Ellie and Nora confronting each other, a former ally of Abby’s, inside a spore-infested hospital.
Although the fans do not hear Nora’s statement onscreen, the original source material leaves no room for any ambiguity at all – and under pressure, Nora confesses to Ellie that Abby is living at an old Seattle aquarium.
Once a sign of peace shared between Abby and Owen, the aquarium now acts as a safe haven far away from the WLF-Seraphite chaos. It’s not a premeditated hideout space—it’s personal, it's vulnerable, and at the same time, it is pretty isolated.
This intimate little space speaks volumes about Abby’s outlook towards it all: she may have strayed away from Joel’s death physically, but emotionally? Well, she's still fixed in her past decisions and new liabilities.
The Last of Us carefully curates this build-up, placing Abby just out of reach. But with Ellie now prepared with knowledge and anger, the stage is now set for a convergence between the two characters.
Whether the show strictly sticks to the video game or it creates its own path, one thing is certain for sure—Seattle will no longer be a city enough for both of them.
The Last of Us lives and thrives both on emotional dualism, and Abby’s vanishing post-Joel’s death somewhat perfectly fits that theme.
While she hasn’t come back to the main narrative as of yet, her journey is still very much in continuation off-screen, shaped by survival, war, and salvation. As Ellie closes in, The Last of Us gets ready for a volatile clash—one where both revenge and humanity will be tested like they never have been tested before.
