Netflix's Ginny & Georgia is among the streaming platform's most popular global shows. It follows the story of how Georgia and her children navigate their lives in a new town called Wellsbury, in Massachusetts, and how their lives change when Georgia's past comes into light.
While the show deals with themes of self-identity and tackles several other challenges in society, such as depression, and the casual racism Ginny faces in school, the town used as the backdrop in the show also might catch one's eye. However, to the viewers' surprise, Wellsbury is actually a fictional town created for the show. As per Decider, Massachusetts does not have a town named Wellsbury, but it sounds similar to two existing towns of the US state named Westbury and Wellesley.
Other than the town being fictional, the Sarah Lampert-created show was also revealed to be not filmed in the US but in Canada.
More on this in our story.
Ginny & Georgia: Wellsbury is a fictional town
In Season 1 of Ginny & Georgia, Georgia and her children shift to the new and vibrant Massachusetts town, Wellsbury. At the beginning, it appears to be the perfect town for the family to reside in. However, as the show progressed, the challenges the family faces, including Ginny's struggles with depression and the emergence of Georgie's dark past, were depicted.
As intense and dramatic secrets come out, the backdrop becomes a crucial part of the scenes. Whether it's Joe's cafe or Ginny's classroom and school, these places became important due to the dramatic scenes that occurred in them. However, those quaint shops and picturesque views are not from Wellsbury, as it is fictional.
However, it is still closer to the creator, Sarah Lampert's town, where she grew up. Lampert grew up in Newton, a town in Massachusetts, which inspired her to create Wellsbury. While talking to PopViewers, she shared how her life in the small town inspired her to create the story of Ginny & Georgia. She said:
"Wellsbury is based off a town that I grew up in. It had this whole idea of being very woke, and our slogan was ‘no place for hate’, and it was obviously still problematic. And Ginny navigating through that is a big part of the show."
Apart from the town being fictional, viewers would be surprised to know that Ginny & Georgia is actually filmed in Canada, rather than Massachusetts, USA.
Ginny & Georgia is filmed in Canada
Ginny & Georgia is actually filmed in the Canadian city of Toronto and the picturesque town of Cobourg, in Ontario. As per IMDb, the Netflix series filmed its indoor scenes in Toronto's TriBro studios. Furthermore, as per The Tab, the show used an old Secondary School building in Toronto to depict Wellsbury High School, where Ginny and her friends go.
Other than that, most of the outdoor scenes were filmed in the town of Cobourg. The streets of the town were altered a little to give it the American twist, but it is still the same quaint town, which is popular for being near the famous Lake Ontario. Further, while using King Street, the show also used the iconic Victoria Hall for filming the Netflix series.
