It has been more than four years since Kate Winslet arrived on our television screens as Marianne "Mare" Sheehan in Mare of Easttown. However, audiences still have not been able to forget the crime drama, thanks to its engaging narrative.
Set in the titular suburb of Pennsylvania, the show revolves around police detective Mare, who is tasked with solving the murder case of a teenage girl. Meanwhile, she struggles with challenges in her personal life.
There are a number of scenic spots featured in the show, which makes one wonder where it was filmed. So, here is all you need to know about the Mare of Easttown filming locations.
Mare of Easttown filming locations
Mare of Easttown was shot in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The full list of the HBO show’s filming locations is as follows:
1. Easttown Township, Chester County
As the show's title would suggest, Mare of Easttown was mainly shot in Easttown Township, Chester County. Although the real Easttown is wealthier and more suburban than the show version, the producers wanted to keep the story close to its roots.
The creator of the show, Brad Ingelsby, grew up nearby in Berwyn, Chester County, so he could give a personal touch to the show by basing the story around the town. Filming of the series began in 2019 but had to be halted for a few months due to the pandemic in 2020.
In the show, Easttown perfectly stands in for a small working-class town. The exterior shots involving the streets and houses were filmed on location in the township.
2. Coatesville, Chester County
Coatesville was also a major filming location for Mare of Easttown. Scenes depicting Carrie Layden’s house and Jess’s apartment were filmed here. Meanwhile, the production crew turned an old train station in town into the Easttown Police Department. The building’s historic structure and brick walls gave an authentic feel.
Coatesville’s neighborhoods like Ash Park and Carver Court are also featured in the series. At the same time, the Easttown schools were showcased through the buildings of Coatesville Intermediate High School and South Brandywine Middle School. The town cemetery, Fairview Cemetery, was also utilized for some important scenes.
3. Phoenixville, Chester County
Another Chester County town that can be noticed in the show is Phoenixville. Its main street, Bridge Street, served as a major filming location. The street had to be shut for general traffic during the shoot. The gas station and storefronts situated along Bridge Street helped capture the look of a busy small town.
4. Delaware County
The filming of Mare of Easttown took place across several towns of Delaware County as well. The town of Wallingford was the place where Mare’s house was situated, which became one of the most important settings in the series. The Don’s Deli and Aquarium World, located in Boothwyn, can also be spotted in the show.
The shoot then took place at a pharmacy and at the Star Hotel Bar in Marcus Hook. Finally, the Chadds Ford town in Delaware County featured a house that was converted into the McMenamin family home.
5. Philadelphia
The shoot also took place in the main city of Philadelphia, where St. Michael’s Church and Girard College were used for some important sequences. Montgomery County, located near the city, was utilized for some outdoor scenes, which were particularly filmed at the Wissahickon Valley Park and the Magargee Dam.
All episodes of Mare of Easttown are streaming on HBO Max.
