The Apple TV+ series was shot across a mix of Canadian cities and natural locations. So, where exactly was Murderbot filmed? The production team spent time in Toronto, Vancouver, and the community of Elora, each adding to Muderbot's visual style.

Where was Murderbot shot?

Toronto brought the future indoors:

Toronto served as the main hub for Murderbot's high-tech interiors and futuristic set pieces. The city's architecture, with its mix of sleek glass and sharp lines, provided the perfect location for advanced colonies. The chosen location was the York University Subway Station in North York, with its boomerang-like shape and glass panels.

These real-world factors were blended with green screen backdrops to create settings that felt both expansive and authentic. The city also provided practical benefits that a production could hope for, such as ideal sound stages and generous tax incentives. That combination allowed the crew to build large-scale, practical sets while still keeping the show's cinematic look.

For the show, it became the perfect place to build a believable future while keeping one foot firmly planted in reality.

Vancouver gave the show its sleek urban energy:

If Toronto handled much of Murderbot's indoor magic, Vancouver supplied its open, modern cityscapes. Known for its cinematic skyline and variety of contemporary buildings, the city became a playground for the show's design team. The architecture revealed a futuristic yet grounded aesthetic, something that feels both alien and familiar.

The crew utilized the state's production facilities and postproduction resources, making it a natural choice for visual effects work. As executive producer Chris Weitz told a press roundtable;

"Vancouver has this uncanny ability to look like somewhere you've never been before, but also somewhere you could imagine living in."

Elora turned nature into another character:

Not all of Murderbot's charm comes from steel and glass. Some of its most striking scenes were filmed in Elora, Ontario, particularly at the Elora Quarry Conservation Area. This two-acre, water-filled limestone quarry framed by towering 40-foot cliffs offered a dramatic natural contrast to the show's man-made environments.

The surrounding Elora Gorge and Grand River added extra texture to outdoor sequences, anchoring the futuristic story in raw, earthy beauty. The quarry isn't new to film; it previously appeared in the It movies, and it remains a popular local landmark for hiking, swimming, and sightseeing.

For Apple TV's Murderbot, it provided a rugged, unpolished edge to moments set beyond the controlled environments of colonies and ships. This variety of settings, from urban sophistication to the wilderness, helped the series balance its comedic moments with its action-driven storytelling.

Each location offers something unique, from futuristic interiors to urban sophistication to stunning nature. Together, they create a setting that aligns with the show's humor, heart, and action.

It's proof that with the right creative choices, you can make anywhere in the world feel like the furthest reaches of the galaxy.
