The Eternaut, which premiered on Netflix on April 30, 2025, is one of the more popular shows on the streaming platform. The Argentinian sci-fi series follows a group of survivors in Buenos Aires who are battling an alien invasion.
The Eternaut is created by Bruno Stagnaro. From snow-covered roads to the apocalyptic city landscape, the location in the series plays an important role in keeping the audience hooked to the screen. The show was filmed completely in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
As per Tudum by Netflix, Stagnaro shared,
“The city is another living character. It was a stroke of luck that just as we were trying to make it, a technological breakthrough emerged that brought us much closer to transforming a living city into The Eternaut city.”
In the series, a toxic snow-shower takes over Buenos Aires, killing a huge number of the population. Juan Salvo (played by Ricardo Darín) sets out to find his daughter in the midst of the chaos and learns some secrets about the snow.
The Eternaut is based on the Argentine comic book by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and illustrated by Francisco Solano Lopez.
Filming locations of The Eternaut
Principal photography of the series, set in Buenos Aires, began in May 2023. The production team used real city locations with enhanced technology to highlight the isolation and the sombre themes of the show. The 35 real location and 25 virtual production sets of The Eternaut complement the urgency and anxiety of the storyline.
The show was filmed in the capital city of Argentina, which is home to some buildings of political and cultural significance. The production used huge digital screens with real locations to create snowfall and adjust the environment in real time.
The snow covering on the location was added in post-production using technology that took more than a year. During filming in the locations, fake snow was used so the actors could perform their roles with better understanding. Cacodelphia Studios helped with the virtual production for indoor and some outdoor scenes.
VFX supervisors Igacio Pol and Pablo Accame shared how they integrated technology with real locations while making the show. As per the featurette on Tudum by Netflix, Pol said,
“To tell the story of The Eternaut, it was clear we needed to develop technology that didn’t exist. Given the nature of the story, in which Buenos Aires is covered in snow, and it’s all sort of apocalyptic. And some locations would have been impossible to film in real life.”
Accame shared,
“This technique allowed us to shoot in Buenos Aires without being in Buenos Aires. We captured Buenos Aires on screen in the snow.”
Pol added,
“The virtual production technique and the use of screens, which allows the actors to see what’s happening and greatly improves the lighting on set, were crucial.”
Many of the scenes were also shot on Avenida General Paz freeway. The freeway separates the city from the Buenos Aires Province. The wide shots on the roads covered with snow gave the scenes an apocalyptic feel.
One of the locations where many of the action sequences were filmed is Saavedra, which is in the Northern end of the city, known for its large estates and sports facilities.
