Broadchurch, the British crime show, did not need loud explosions, slick edits, or melodrama to deliver a refreshing story. Created by the Doctor Who writer, the show only took a haunting seaside cliff, a dead child, and a small community’s collective grief to create a thrilling slow-burner.

Across its 24 episodes and three-season run from 2013 to 2017, the ITV series (originally aired) won the hearts of crime drama lovers with its tension-packed plotting and ensemble cast, including Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, and Arthur Darvill.

Which Broadchurch season keeps the tension highest? Ranking all three seasons

The show delivered a new wave of emotional stakes and mystery with each new installment, but which season truly stood out? We're ranking all three seasons of Broadchurch to track which installment gave the maximum dose of dramatic tension.

1. Season 1 sets the tone and delivers waves of unrelenting tension

The first season revolves around a tragic discovery when 11-year-old Danny Latimer’s body was found on the beach beneath a cliff in the fictional Dorset town of Broadchurch.

Season 1 tells us that Hardy already carries the weight of his previous case, which eventually catches up to him unexpectedly. Slowly, the horrifying murder led to a portrait of guilt, gossip, and grief.

DI Alec Hardy (David Tennant), the outsider with a backstory, and DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman), the superbly social local, are forced to navigate not just the marks of the crime but also the rising risk and tensions of investigating the community.

Why season 1 is hailed as the best:

Season one is often considered perfect television, and with good reason. Season 1 really sets the tone for the mysterious world of Broadchurch: from the newspaper seller to the vicar, nobody remains out of the ambit of doubt.

The writing is tight, the pacing deliberate, and the performances leave lasting impact. Olivia Colman, in particular, delivers one of the most emotionally raw portrayals seen in contemporary crime dramas.

But what makes season one a hard-hitting exposition is the season’s final reveal that lands like a solid gut punch.

2. Season 2 builds upon the established tension

Season 2 picks up right where the first season wrapped up. Yet, season 2 does not use the old, rehashed formula to deliver the aftermath of the opening season.

Danny’s killer stands trial, and the town has to once again revisit the harrowing discovery. But Joe denies all blame related to the boy's murder, and Ellie, who is now isolated due to her husband’s crimes, grapples with her new reality.

The first act was intense, and Season 2 got the pulse of the viewers. The tension-packed narrative took time to make the stories surrounding these characters even more personal.

3. Season 3 walks a different path but keeps the tensions high

The third season came to screens in 2017 and explores what disturbs the Broadchurch community again. In the refreshing manner of season 2, season 3 does not circle back to the Latimer case. Chibnall cleverly placed another assault-crime plotline to give the already bubbling tension a rekindling.

The rape investigation for the rape of Trish Winterman (Julie Hesmondhalgh) leads to one of the most respectfully and meticulously handled depictions of s*xual assault.

Hardy and Ellie return as a set of iconic professionals who’ve come out of the shadows of their past in order to pursue the work with intensity. In season 3, the tension doesn’t revolve around death but survival.

Season 3's crises build the stage upon which the show examines key themes of shame, disbelief, and the systemic collapses surrounding s*xual assault cases.
