Scrubs is returning to the screens after a long wait of 15 years as a revival of the sitcom is currently in development at ABC. The medical comedy series, which told the story of interns at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital, originally aired nine seasons between 2001 and 2010.
During the final installment of the show, several main characters left the project, and the story focused on a new set of medical students, which received criticism from fans. Ever since the revival was announced, audiences have been wondering which characters will be at the center of the narrative in the new show.
The original series creator, Bill Lawrence, has now finally answered the question, revealing that the Scrubs reboot will focus on two fan-favorites: John Michael "J.D." Dorian and Christopher Turk, played by Zach Braff and Donald Faison, respectively. Lawrence said in an interview with TV Line:
“This one is [also] called Scrubs, and it starts with JD and Turk.”

During the interview, Bill Lawrence also talked about the challenges of reviving the series, explaining how the actors have obviously aged, and people might not accept them in goody characters anymore. He said:
“The hardest part is that Zach and Donald have aged. People still have that affinity, and love, for that goofy youthfulness — it’s why the T-Mobile commercials work so well. But if I saw two guys in their late 40s/early 50s doing ‘World’s Most Giant Doctor,’ and carrying each other around all the time, I would go, ‘What the f*** is going on,’ you know?”
He added:
“To see what that [friendship] looks like at their age, and [take] a comedic look at what medicine has become since those kids started out as interns, and see how our people would look at it, deal with it, and try to remain optimistic.”
Talking about the premise of the Scrubs revival, Lawrence said it will continue to be a workplace comedy. However, he added that now that the characters have aged, their children might also make appearances in the series:
“I think it’s inevitable that JD and Elliot’s [Sarah Chalke] kid makes appearances, but Scrubs is first and foremost a workplace comedy, so I think we’re going to keep it that.”
The original series followed JD, who joined the Sacred Heart Hospital as an intern and learned some valuable lessons about life, career, and friendship from his quirky colleagues and patients. The show became famous for JD’s surrealistic narration and for its slapstick humor. It originally aired on NBC until the network decided to cancel it after Season 7.
ABC then picked it up and continued to air it for two more seasons. The revival was greenlit in May 2025, with Zach Braff confirmed to reprise his role as JD. The rest of the actors remain to be announced, but the creators are reportedly in talks with several of the original cast members to return for the reboot.
