Malva Christie was found dead in Outlander Season 6, Episode 6, The World Turned Upside Down, lying in Claire and Jamie’s garden with her throat slit and her unborn baby still inside her. The scene was brutal and sudden. One moment, Claire saw Malva approaching the house alone. The next time she opened the door, Malva was already gone.

Claire had dosed herself with ether to avoid a confrontation, but when she woke and stepped outside, she saw Malva’s lifeless body on the ground near the beehives. In a desperate attempt to save the child, Claire cut open the girl’s abdomen, hoping to revive the baby, but it was already too late.

The whole moment felt like it came out of nowhere, but the tension around Malva had been building all season. Her murder set off a chain of events that turned the Ridge upside down. At first, suspicion fell on Claire herself. But in Outlander Season 7, Episode 2, the truth finally came out: Allan Christie, her half-brother, had killed her. That’s all we’ll say for now, because there’s a lot more to unpack about how everything led to this.

Everything about Malva’s death in Outlander looked like a setup. Her body turned up just steps from Claire’s house, her throat cut clean, and her pregnancy far enough along that the baby couldn’t be ignored. It was clear someone wanted Malva silenced. But for weeks, no one knew who did it or why. Claire became the obvious suspect.

She had argued with Malva. She had slapped her. And most damning of all, Claire had been the one to find the body. She was alone, drugged with ether, and had the medical skill to carry out a post-mortem surgery. That didn’t sit right with a lot of people on the Ridge. And Claire, despite her shock and grief, couldn’t prove she didn’t do it.

At the time of Malva’s death, she had accused Jamie of fathering her child. She made the claim in front of her father, Tom Christie, and backed it up with what sounded like specific details. Jamie denied it. Claire didn’t believe it. But once that lie was out there, it poisoned everything. People believed Malva because she looked innocent and vulnerable, and the story made sense on the surface.

Jamie was powerful, respected, and he’d been seen with her once or twice while Claire was sick. That was enough for rumors to take root. What no one knew then was that the real father was Allan Christie.

Allan had been abusing Malva for years. He was her half-brother, but he didn’t treat her like family. He controlled her, threatened her, and when she got pregnant, he panicked. Malva, under pressure, slept with other men—Young Ian and Bobby Higgins among them—hoping she could pin the child on someone else. But nothing worked.

Eventually, Allan forced her to say it was Jamie. He believed Jamie would give her money and send her away, which would help them avoid shame. Malva agreed, but only for a while.

By the time she showed up at Claire’s house that day, she’d changed her mind. She was ready to tell the truth. She didn’t want to hurt Claire. She didn’t want to live with Allan’s lies. She was walking up to the door to confess everything. That’s when Allan stopped her. He followed her through the woods, argued with her near the garden, and when she refused to keep lying, he slit her throat.

Allan stayed quiet after the murder. He let Tom take the blame. Tom even confessed to protect Claire, knowing the law would want someone to hang. It wasn’t until Outlander Season 7, Episode 2, that Allan finally admitted what he’d done. Claire found him crying at Malva’s grave.

He broke down, told her everything, and reached for a gun to end his own life. Claire tried to stop him. But Young Ian was already watching from the trees. Before Allan could fire, Ian shot him in the chest with an arrow. Allan died kneeling at the grave of the girl he claimed to love.
