Bridgerton Season 4 is set to release this January. But before that, let's roll back behind the voice of Lady Whistledown. The voice that beautifully narrates the Regency period drama simplifies each scene for us. The viewers and now the Queen (and the ton) know that Penelope Featherington is the real Lady Whistledown.

Nicholas Coughlan portrays Penelope, but she doesn't voice Lady Whistledown for the first three seasons. It is not difficult to decipher that it's not Nichola's voice; it's a firmer and more mature voice. The voices behind the phrases "Dearest Gentle Reader "and "Yours Lady Whistledown" are none other than those of the legendary Dame Julie Andrews. Yes, Dame Julie Andrews voices Lady Whistledown in Netflix's Bridgerton.

Dame Julie Andrews is a legendary actor, writer, and producer who is a recipient of several accolades. This includes an Oscar, three Emmys, three Grammy and seven Golden Globes in her her eight decade long career.

Dame Julie Andrews needs no introduction. An extraordinary talent, she has been a part of several notable projects. The list includes The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Thoroughly Modern Milie to name a few. She began her career as a child actress, and since then, she appeared in numerous projects. Andrews was rewarded with the prestigious title of Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in the 200 New Year Honors for her extraordinary career in the performing arts.

Apart from this, she has also worked as a voice actor/narrator in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Minions: The Rise of Gru, Aquaman, Despicable Me, and The King's Daughter, among others.

Honestly, Julie Andrews aces the narrator's role in this period drama. Her voice is firm, regal, and addictive. Voicing Lady Whistledown isn't an easy task. She is the voice of the unheard, the voice of the scandals and secrets that the ton likes to brush under the carpet.

In a candid chat with Parade, Julie Andrews describes Lady Whistledown as:

"A mysterious and rather sharp-tongued gossip writer of the day."

She continued:

"I occassionally guide it, twist it, point it in some direction or another. I can make it break anybody, it seems if I wish."

After all, as Penelope rightfully puts it in Season 3, when Cressida threatens to expose her:

"It is not just gossip. Whistledown is power."

Who will narrate Bridgerton Season 4?

In the Bridgerton Season 3 finale episode, Penelope reveals that she was the real Lady Whistledown. The dramatic reveal at the butterfly ball came after Cressida blackmailed Penelope and Colin. Penelope had no choice but to say the truth about Lady Whistledown's true identity.

But what was left us on a cliffhanger was the quiet passing of the baton at the end. Yes, the change of voice from Julie Andrews to Nichola Coughlan (who plays Penelope) was smooth and a fitting move. But it left us wondering who will be the narrator of Season 4.

Turns out Dame Julie Andrews will continue to be the narrator. The trailer teases it, and showrunner Jess Brownell seems positive that she's returning for Season 4. In a candid chat with Glamour, Brownell said:

"So thematically, that is absolutely the right assumption because it makes so much sense now that Penelope is owning her own voice to literally have her voice Lady Whistledown. However, Julie Andrews is just such a part of the feeling of the show. So, we’re playing around in season 4 with ways that we can explain why it’s still Julie Andrews. I think it’s just—it’s in Penelope’s head the way she officially reads it to herself as she writes."
