Bon Appétit, Your Majesty premiered on Netflix on August 23, 2025, and has been generating positive buzz among both critics and viewers alike. The official synopsis of the show, as mentioned by Rotten Tomatoes, reads,
“After time traveling to the Joseon era, a talented chef meets a tyrant king; her modern dishes captivate his palate, but royal challenges await her.”
Lee Chae Min and Lim Yoon-A star as the protagonists, and while the duo’s chemistry and acting skills are praised, Lee Chae Min was not the initial choice for the role of King Yi Heon in Bon Appétit, Your Majesty. The role was initially meant for Park Sung-Hoon, who was then removed because he shared an explicit image that was part of a parody AV video focusing on Squid Game, another Netflix show.
After Park Sung-Hoon was made to step down from playing King Yi Heon, Lee Chae Min was cast as the lead in Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, and given his performance in the show, it is safe to say that he has been doing a pretty good job.
Park Sung-Hoon was the original choice for the male lead in Bon Appétit, Your Majesty
As mentioned previously, Park Sung-Hoon was removed from the cast of Bon Appétit, Your Majesty following a controversy. Lee Chae Min joined the cast after that, and because of the whole fiasco with the original choice, the replacement process proved to be a bit stressful.
Talking about the same, director Jang Tae-yoo said,
“Park’s departure happened before main shooting began. It was during the preparation period, when many variables occur. I consider it just part of the time that has passed.”
He went ahead with praising Lee Chae Min and added,
“He wasn’t the actor we thought of at first, but I am 120 percent satisfied with him. All actors give their best, but that doesn’t always guarantee results. In Lee’s case, his preparation showed in his performance, and I am very pleased.”
As for Lee Chae Min himself, the actor admitted that he felt quite pressured due to the way he was cast and how little time he had. Elaborating on the same, Lee Chae Min said,
“It’s true I had little time, so the sense of burden and responsibility was heavy. But the director invited me often before filming, so I could participate in group readings and shape the character’s tone and feel. The senior actors gave me feedback and support, and the director’s detailed guidance helped a lot.”
With effective help from the team, Lee Chae Min got a better understanding of the role, which is evident in his performance. Viewers are also quite happy with the lead pair's chemistry on screen, and therefore, the initial casting hiccup has not had any effect on the success of the show.
Bon Appétit, Your Majesty can be streamed on Netflix.
