Chief of War is nearing its end, and the true nature of British travelers like Metcalfe and Marley has been revealed. Their greed to capture the Hawaiian islands is evident, and Ka’iana, who has seen a lot, is aware how such deceiving and manipulative minds could destroy the land and its culture.

He knows how the likes of Metcalfe and Marley tend to practice slavery and are maliciously greedy about natural resources. In order to protect their land, he tries to convince Kamehameha in Episode 7 of Chief of War to kill Metcalfe’s crew and send their bones to their friends, as a message to invoke fear. However, he fails to convince the leader, so Metcalfe and his crew are saved.

The impact of sparing their lives is immediately seen at the end of the episode, when Metcalfe and his crew attack the shore of Vai’s village, massacring numerous people.

More on this in our story.

Chief of War: Ka’iana advises Kamehameha to kill Metcalfe’s crew to protect their lands

In Episode 6 of Chief of War, we saw the greedy side of Metcalfe and Marley as they axed local sandalwood trees to steal the aromatic and valuable wood. Their brutality has also been depicted through their attempts to practice slavery, from which Ka’iana saved Tony.

Ka’iana is aware that these foreigners don’t even consider them as fellow humans and neither do they respect their culture. He knows that they think of them as savages and one day will try to snatch their lands. This would hamper his and Kamehameha’s plan of uniting the Hawaiian lands.

Therefore, he tries to convince Kamehameha to kill Metcalfe and his crew before they could inflict serious harm. Metcalfe creates a friendly image before Kamehameha that Ka’iana knows was fake. However, he fails to convince the king, who wants peace and prosperity for all the Hawaiian kingdoms.

This prompts Ka’iana to make his own decision and, with a group of warriors, tries to kill Metcalfe and Marley, but the king stops him. While Kamehameha disapproves of Ka’iana’s method, he still seems aware of the danger brewing, what with the foreigners in their presence. At the end, through John Young, he asks Metcalfe to go away from their lands.

Chief of War: Who ratted Ka’iana’s plan to the king?

Ka’iana’s fear of the British men and their malicious greed is real and, therefore, he suggests the swift solution of killing Metcalfe and his crew in Episode 7 of Chief of War. However, his plans fail when he learns that Kamehameha knows about it, and is stopped from breaking the law that forbids them from killing anyone who hasn’t harmed them.

Tony and Nahi supported Ka’iana in his plan, but Namake and Kupuohi were not convinced. He first thinks it's Namake who might have revealed his plan to the king.

However, it is soon discovered that Kupuohi, and not Namake, had informed the king about Ka’iana’s plan to kill Metcalfe and Marley. Her complicated feelings toward the growing closeness between Ka’iana and Kaʻahumanu becomes a reason for her ratting to the king about Ka’iana’s plan.
