Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 brought us closer to the story of the creation of the One Ring. Sauron’s cunningness and manipulation helped him disguise his true identity since Season 1, when he initially began using Celebrimbor to forge a ring. However, before he could own that ring, Galadriel learned about his identity - that he was not Halbrand but Sauron.
After his identity was revealed in Season 2, the Dark Lord disguised himself as another character called Annatar, the lord of gifts, to trick Celebrimbor into creating more rings. Annatar traps the Elven-smith in an illusion to make him create the nine rings of men after creating seven Dwarven rings.
More on this in our story.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 - Annatar approaches Celebrimbor
In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, after everybody comes to know of Halbrand’s real identity, leaving him devoid of the Elven rings, he makes another attempt. He approaches Celebrimbor in Eregion and convinces him that he is Annatar, the lord of gifts.
He claims that he had been sent by Valar to create powerful objects for the people of Middle-earth that would save them from evil. Celebrimbor is easily tricked by his manipulations, and begins forging the Dwarven rings using the mithril. One of these rings is also given to Durin III, whose greed blinds him after he wears the ring.
When Durin IV informs Celebrimbor and Annatar, the Dark Lord suggests that his guilt of creating more rings without informing Gil-galad might be the reason behind the adverse effects of the dwarven rings. While Celebrimbor vows to make more rings to compensate for the issues that arose in the Dwarven rings, Durin III’s greed for mining mithril awakens the Balrog, resulting in his death.
