John A. Norris' coming-of-age YA drama series Motorheads will not be returning for Season 2 as Amazon Prime Video has shockingly axed the show after one season, which premiered on May 20.

Starring Ryan Phillippe, Michael Cimino, and Melissa Collazo in the lead roles, the show explores themes of first love and messy teen friendships in a town that has a history of streetcar racing. After twins Zac and Caitlyn move back to Ironwood, Pennsylvania, they discover their passion for motor car racing and find themselves drawn into the town's history in the sport, thanks to their uncle and former NASCAR driver Logan.

Motorheads, which currently has an audience RT score of 94%, debuted with strong viewership numbers and earned a rightful place in Amazon Prime Video's Top 10 charts, a place it still holds. Coincidentally, proving its strong staying power, the show also re-entered Amazon's top 5 charts yesterday, making the cancellation news even more confusing.

In addition to its strong OTT hold, the show was also a hit among the audience. However, the show never made it to Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 charts and showed a slow success rate compared to other teen series on the platform, which likely led to its cancellation.

More on Motorheads' cancellation in our story.

Why did Amazon Prime Video cancel Motorheads after one season?

Motorheads' cancellation news is even more shocking, considering Amazon Prime Video is currently building a strong YA series library with shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty (TSITP), Maxton Hall, and the Mia Culpa films. These coming-of-age series and movies are not only the forerunners of the genre on the platform, but have also amassed a huge fan base and been renewed for further seasons.

So, what made Amazon decide this brutal fate for the show? The answer might lie in the unique premise of the show, which was unlike any popular IPs on Amazon currently.

While Motorheads is a coming-of-age tale that explores popular themes like first love, messy friendships, and teen rivalry, it also unlocks and features a whole other world of street car racing, rarely explored in a teen show before. The title itself may also have failed to resonate with the predominantly female audience for YA dramas like TSITP. While the show has impressive numbers, it had a slow start and struggled to find the right audience, which also explains its current stay in Amazon's top charts.

Lastly, since Motorheads was an original idea and not based on popular books like TSITP and We Were Liars, it didn't have an established audience before its arrival. This was likely another roadblock for the show's delayed success and popularity, which eventually led to its cancellation.

Can Motorheads return on a new streaming platform?

While the streetcar racing-based show stands canceled for now, Amazon has permitted the producers to take it into the market, in a rare move. The show still stands a chance, and the creators have already started a conversation with other potential homes, as executive producer Jason Seagraves revealed to Deadline:

“We set out to make a show with no agenda and a lot of heart, to give families something they can watch together.''

He added:

“While Johnny and I are disappointed Motorheads won’t be continuing at Prime Video, we couldn’t be more proud of what the team created. Despite going into release with impossibly low audience awareness, our passionate and vocal fan base led the charge and made the series impossible to ignore. Their enthusiasm has energized us and we’re optimistic we’ll find a home that believes in and supports the show.”

While it is certainly rare for original series to find a different home elsewhere, the recent popularity of the series could mark a rare precedent. If picked up, fans may finally see Harris’ fate and the mystery of Christian Maddox’s disappearance resolved in another season.

Motorheads is currently streaming (and thriving in the No. 7 spot) on Amazon Prime Video.
