However, as Season 2 took off, it is revealed that Freddie died from illness, a nod to the Spanish Flu pandemic during the time.

Why did Peaky Blinders kill off Freddie Thorne?

The audience is introduced to Freddie Thorne in Peaky Blinders in Season 1. He is a socialist in Birmingham, who fought for the rights of the working-class people. Freddie and Tommy Shelby were childhood friends and even fought in the World War together. Their friendship, however, hits a rough patch due to their difference in opinion, especially due to Freddie’s communist ideologies. Freddie, and Tommy’s sister, Ada will have a romantic relationship and often met under the bridge secretly. His love for her transcended the fear towards her brothers, after all they shared a brutal history together.

Freddie’s involvement in the communist movement will bring in the attention of the authorities. He will decide to leave the town but learns that Ada is pregnant. He decides to stay back in town. The two will get married in secret even as Freddie lives in hiding. Inspector Campbell (played by Sam Neill) continues to pursue him. Ada will give birth to their son, Karl.

Freddie gets arrested suddenly but Tommy had no role in it. Freddie manages to escape the authorities and will end up alongside the Peaky Blinders facing off Billy Kimber’s men.

Season 2 of the BBC series opens with Freddie’s funeral. It is disclosed that he died from a serious ailment. In a memorable moment, Tommy will speak at Freddie’s grave, reminiscing their friendship. He states that in France he had promised that he would speak at his funeral if Freddie passed away before him and Tommy was keeping his word. At the end it was not the war but ‘pestilence’ that took him. Freddie's death, however, went on to have a substantial influence on Ada’s character in the narrative, as she becomes a more formidable figure.

Freddie Thorne’s end in Peaky Blinders seems rather abrupt, but the real reason for his sudden death is because of the unavailability of the actor Iddo Goldberg. Goldberg left the series to portray the role of Isaac Walton in Salem. He later went on to appear in other successful projects as Fear, Get Shorty, Westworld, The Last Tycoon, Snowpiercer and The Zookeeper’s Wife.

Peaky Blinders is available to stream on Netflix.
