Robin Buckley’s arrival in Stranger Things Season 3 was nothing short of electric. Introduced as the quick-witted and sharp-tongued Scoops Ahoy employee, she instantly challenged Steve Harrington’s charm and slid into the ensemble cast with an effortless freshness. Robin's deadpan humor and razor-sharp comebacks quickly made her one of Stranger Things' standout characters.

But beyond the sailor uniform and sarcastic brilliance, what cemented her place in fans’ hearts was her emotional depth and her iconic coming-out scene. Ever since her debut, Robin has only grown more central in the Duffer Brothers' sci-fi universe. If you have also paused mid-episode, wondering why Robin looks so familiar, you are not alone.

The actress behind the character, Maya Hawke, comes from Hollywood lineage, as she is the daughter of Hollywood actors Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. However, Maya Hawke built an impressive body of work that reaches far beyond Stranger Things. After her impressive debut in the BBC adaptation of Little Women, Hawke has appeared in popular titles like Asteroid City and Inside Out 2.

More on this in our story.

Meet Maya Hawke: The actress who brings Robin from Stranger Things to life

While Maya Hawke grew up in Hollywood, thanks to her father, Ethan Hawke, and mother, Uma Thurman's thriving acting careers, she carved out her own place and became the breakout star of Stranger Things in Season 3. Hawke made her small-screen debut with the 2017 BBC adaptation of Little Women, where she played the character of Jo March.

A year after her debut, Maya Hawke won hearts as the goofball Robin Buckley, who gets entangled with Steve and the Hawkins gang in the Duffer Brothers' popular sci-fi saga. The breakout role opened a door of opportunities for the actress, and she also appeared in Quentin Tarantino's 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, where she played the character of Linda Kasabian/'Flowerchild'.

In recent years, the Stranger Things star has appeared in many films, namely Gia Coppola's sophomore film Mainstream and the 2021 drama film Italian Studies. In 2020, Hawke also guest-starred in Showtime's miniseries The Good Lord Bird, starring her father, Ethan Hawke. The actress played the character of Annie Brown, her father's on-screen daughter.

Some of Maya Hawke's other notable film roles include Netflix's dark comedy film Do Revenge, alongside Camila Mendes, Bradley Cooper's biographical film Maestro, and the 2023 crime comedy film The Kill Room, alongside her mother, Uma Thurman. In 2021, Maya Hawke also starred in a Stranger Things spin-off podcast based on her character, titled Rebel Robin: Surviving Hawkins.

After saving Hawkins in the final chapter of the Duffer Brothers' sci-fi saga, Maya Hawke will appear in Will Gluck's 2026 comedy film One Night Only, Francis Lawrence's dystopian action film The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (as Wiress), and Graham Parkes' upcoming romantic film Wishful Thinking, opposite Lewis Pullman.

Maya Hawke's Robin became a fan-favorite Stranger Things character

While Maya Hawke made her quiet debut as Robin in Stranger Things Season 3, when fans had already sided with one or more characters, she managed to find her loyal fanbase. Her comic timing, dry and witty one-liners, and the eye to fish out hidden clues simply made her a stand-out character, and Robin demanded attention. After being an outsider all throughout her life, the Russian decoding sequence in Season 3 gave space for the character to shine, and the rest is history.

The iconic truth serum scene between Robin and Steve in the bathroom from Stranger Things Season 3 is still considered iconic and featured the former's coming out tale. Since s*xuality was still taboo in the 1980s, Robin doesn't let it define her character and finds genuine meaning in her friendship with Steve and the Hawkin's gang.

The recently released Part 1 of the final season again featured a spotlight on Robin, who struck an unlikely friendship with Will and advised him to embrace his true self to unlock his full potential. Seasoned franchise fans are rightfully crediting Robin's friendship and support that helped Will realize his shocking connection with Vecna's hive mind and his psychic abilities to control the demogorgons.

With only four episodes left, fans are excited to see how Stranger Things will wrap Robin's character arc and give her and the Hawkins gang the conclusion they deserve.
