Sara Ramirez played Che Diaz, the non-binary stand-up comedian and Miranda Hobbes' former partner in Max's dramedy series, And Just Like That. Introduced in the debut season of Sex and the City's reboot series, the stand-up comedian co-hosted a podcast with Carrie Bradshaw and Jackie Nee. While Miranda and Che did not hit it off during their first meeting, they soon developed feelings towards each other. Miranda divorced her husband, Steve, to be with Che.
However, their relationship reached a rocky phase by the end of And Just Like That Season 2. In Episode 6, titled "Bomb Cycle," Miranda and Che finally broke up. Che later used their relationship and its downfall as material for a comedy show. In the season finale, Che apologized to Miranda for mining their breakup for stand-up.
Che might have been a controversial character of the series, but viewers enjoyed their meme-worthy quotes. When it was revealed that Sara Ramirez would not return for Season 3, speculation swirled a great deal. The sudden exit led fans to assume Ramirez had been fired from the show due to their politically charged posts on social media.
However, in an interview with Variety, showrunner Michael Patrick King revealed Sara Ramirez left the show as their character Che Diaz's plot concluded. King told Variety:
"Every time people say they don’t like Che, I go, ‘You mean you don’t like standups! I mean, you’re standing on stage asking people to think you’re art. It’s a lot, that character. The audience got to see other sides, which is all you’re supposed to be doing if you get more than one season.”
Cynthia Nixon on Sara Ramirez's Che's exit from Max's dramedy And Just Like That
Cynthia Nixon, who plays Miranda Hobbes in the show, had mentioned in passing Ramirez's exit in a 2024 interview with Variety. Nixon revealed:
"They created such an amazing character — such a controversial character, but such an amazing character, “I think they felt, and Michael Patrick felt, that that character had run its course. They came in and shook everything up, and then the arc was completed.”
She added:
"I do feel like our show always works best when people are dating,”
Nixon also revealed that her character Miranda will explore her single life in And Just Like That Season 3. In the premiere episode, viewers see Miranda visiting a lesbian bar to find a potential match, where she encounters an over-enthusiastic Canadian tourist, Mary, played by Rosie O' Donnell.
