Prime Video's We Were Liars re-imagining has raised quite the stir, not just about its conclusion, but whether Season 2 will ever become a reality. Left on an emotionally loaded cliffhanger for a finale, fans are now left asking: Could it be? And more so, should a Season 2 become a reality, would Cadence Sinclair Eastman return? The star herself, Emily Alyn Lind, weighed in on the prospect recently, providing some insight into the series' dubious fate.
Whereas the original novel by E. Lockhart concluded on a strong note, the success of the adaptation and its dark finale have invited speculation. Cadence's story formed the core of Season 1, and the destiny of her character invites enormous questions regarding where exactly a second season might go.
Talking to Collider, Lind confirmed these questions but left the answer in such a manner as to neither confirm nor rule out the return of Cadence.
Emily Alyn Lind sees Cadence's irreversibility in the narrative in We Were Liars
During her Collider interview, Emily Alyn Lind verified what was suspiciously suspected by the fans all along—the tale of Cadence, presented in season one, is complete. When asked how much she knows about the story and the characters, she replied,
"I knew everything because I had so much time in between auditioning and them deciding, “She’s going to be okay. She’ll do this.” There was a writers’ strike in between, and I was filming a movie in London. So, I read the pilot. I’m a pretty avid reader. I don’t read a lot of YA, but I was very interested in where this went, and I was very surprised by that and embarrassed."
Her answer alludes to the definite ending of We Were Liars, which cannot readily be succeeded by a sequel in the conventional sense.
The book—and the series—ends with Cadence's trauma and the entirety of what happened at the Beechwood Island fire. The scene is a closure, or at least on the heroine's part. Lind states that, at least for now, there are no definitive plans to continue further with Cadence's story. As per Collider, she stated,
"I love to hear when people say that they were surprised by the ending. It’s really exciting. The closest thing I can get to that is the first time I read the book. I was like, ‘This chick has b*lls. I am obsessed with her. Emily Lockhart is crazy in the best way possible. This is something that’s going to be really cool because they’re going for it.” That’s all that I could ask for."
Should We Were Liars Season 2 take a prequel route instead?
Surprisingly, Emily Alyn Lind did suggest one direction if there were to be more. She said that if there were more, it wouldn't necessarily have to follow Cadence at all. Rather, a season two could delve into the lives of the Liars' parents and maybe delve into the adult characters and what their choices did to shape the next generation. As per Collider, she revealed,
"What was really interesting to me is that I got to play two different people in one. But I knew everything about it. I had read the prequel by the time I was filming. I did way too much homework, which was great. Usually, you have to make that stuff up yourself, but I had an entire book of this girl’s mind and how she sees the world. That was helpful, for sure."
This comes after speculation on E. Lockhart's Family of Liars, the prequel novel for the Sinclair family set in a past summer. Lind validated the rumor by declaring that if it went this way, with the direction, but she did not provide any comment regarding official plans. But it points out that Cadence is not the central character if the show is to be renewed.
No official sequel or renewal has been put out for We Were Liars
To date, Amazon has not produced a second season of We Were Liars. The show is that of a one-season adaptation with no official go-ahead on a sequel. Lind's interview contains no hint of production happening behind the scenes, and no production news has come out to indicate that Season 2 is in the works.
What that implies is that there are all kinds of speculations, but fans shouldn't be holding their breath for an upcoming sequel. Any additional storytelling within the We Were Liars universe would be more likely to be on a different story thread, away from Cadence's.
Meanwhile, We Were Liars is a closed book now. The remark from Emily Alyn Lind indicates a realization of how grave the ending and the emotional finish are. While one can always hope for a prequel to be created, Cadence's return does not appear imminent unless the producers find a compelling reason for getting back to her tale.
The original story doesn't leave much to a standard sequel, but as is the case with blockbuster adaptations, sometimes fan pressure can make demands of what comes next. Until that official word is received, however, We Were Liars' destiny—and Cadence's within it—is unsure.
