Chicago P.D. has been on-air for 12 years now, and still continues to amaze the audience as the Intelligence Unit of the 21st District deals with high-stakes cases in every episode. The police procedural drama started as a spin-off of Chicago Fire and has become one of the most popular shows on NBC over the years.

The show recently finished airing its 12th season, which featured an unprecedented challenge for the officers, as Deputy Chief Reid went about ruining lives and suspending officers. In the end, the season had a satisfying conclusion with Voight rescuing the team.

The audience is now wondering if and when there will be a Chicago P.D. Season 13. The show is certainly returning for another installment as it was renewed by NBC at the beginning of May 2025.

Chicago P.D. Season 13: Renewal status and release window

Chicago P.D. Season 13 has been confirmed by NBC. The renewal was announced on May 5, 2025. The entire One Chicago franchise, including Chicago Med and Chicago Fire, was given a renewal by NBC owing to its popularity and consistent ratings.

The network has also confirmed that new seasons of these shows will premiere in the 2025 fall schedule. The previous seasons of Chicago P.D. have mostly premiered in the last week of September, and hence, Season 13 is expected to debut by the end of September 2025.

Chicago P.D. Season 13: What to expect?

The previous season had major shake-ups as Reid colluded with drug dealers and eventually shut down the Intelligence Unit, while Kim Burgess was suspended and Dante Torres was arrested. By the end of the season, Voight got rid of Reid, and the team came back on track. Meanwhile, Kim and Adam Ruzek got married in a heartwarming scene.

The next season will likely follow up on these storylines, while introducing new threats and challenges for the team now that Reid is gone. In an interview with ScreenRant, showrunner Gwen Sigan revealed that the next season could either pick up directly after the ‘Burzek’ wedding, or have a time jump to showcase them settled down:

“We haven't gotten back in the room yet. So I think that all of those are options. In my mind, yes, the whole wedding played out. They're married, so we could either see it or we can jump to the future and see them happily married and see what they're up to. So we've got options.”

Sigan continued:

“It's going to be so nice. I think it'll be really nice. There are so many interesting ways to play a married couple on television and to show that relationship and what that relationship is like. Hopefully, we get the chance to explore all of that.”

Chicago P.D. Season 13: Who will star in the show?

As of now, none of the main cast members have announced their exit from the series. Hence, they are all expected to return except Shawn Hatosy as Deputy Chief Charlie Reid, as his arc has come to an end. We expect to see the following actors’ return in the next season:

  • Jason Beghe as Henry "Hank" Voight
  • Patrick John Flueger as Adam Ruzek
  • Marina Squerciati as Kim Burgess
  • Amy Morton as Sergeant Trudy Platt
  • LaRoyce Hawkins as Officer Kevin Atwater
  • Benjamin Levy Aguilar as Officer Dante Torres
  • Toya Turner as Kiana Cook
  • Sara Bues as ASA Nina Chapman
