Michael C. Hall's resurrection as Dexter Morgan officially wrapped its first season on Paramount+ on September 5, and fans are waiting for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2.

A sequel series to Dexter: New Blood, Resurrection follows our serial killer as he recovers from his near-fatal gunshot wound and tries to find his missing son in New York City. However, Dexter Morgan's past comes back in Miami Police Captain Angel Batista and a new serial killers' club owned by Leon Prater.

Resurrection marked a milestone in Dexter's history on the network and garnered 3.1 million cross-platform viewers in its first three days of debut. Fans and critics were all praise for Hall's resurrection as the infamous serial killer, who was on a new hunt.

While Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 is not yet officially renewed by Paramount+, a Deadline report suggests that the network has opened a writers' room for the show, and it would likely return for two more seasons.

More on Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 in our story.

What is the current renewal status of Dexter: Resurrection Season 2?

While Paramount+ has not officially announced Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, many sources have confirmed that a writers' room for the sophomore season was already opened ahead of the Season 1 finale. Reports by Deadline and Variety also suggest that the network wants to focus on Resurrection for now, which is why Dexter: Original Sin was axed prematurely.

Paramount+ renewed Original Sin for Season 2 in April 2025, but following Resurrection's viewing numbers and social media hype, the network took back its renewal order and instead canceled Original Sin. Fans of the prequel series were disappointed with the news that Patrick Gibson's debut run as a young Dexter Morgan was cut short to make space for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, but this is how things stand for now.

Dexter: Resurrection showrunner has plans for a three-season run

While fans are still waiting for Paramount+ to officially announce Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, showrunner Clyde Phillips already has plans for a three-season run. In an interview with Collider, Phillips revealed his plans for the future of the series:

''We pitched him [Michael C. Hall] three seasons that tell a great story that can continue on.''

Additionally, the showrunner also revealed that they do not have a definitive ending for the show yet and will likely continue Resurrection as long as Hall is on board. It looks like Michael C. Hall will call the shots for his sequel series, as Phillips further added:

"This show is going to be on for years...So, we're going to do this as long as Michael wants to. Then, when we know what the final year is, we'll know how to resolve it.''

The Season 1 finale left many loose threads for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2

Dexter: Resurrection concluded its debut season run with an explosive finale, which flipped the New Blood's narrative on its head. While Harrison shot his father in the New Blood finale, he proved to be a worthy successor in Resurrection Season 1 and rescued his father from Leon Prater's vault. Dexter Morgan carefully searched among the heaps of serial killer data in Prater's vault and cunningly deciphered the eight-digit code, following which he was united with Harrison.

While Dexter managed to eliminate his enemy once again and disposed of Leon Prater's chopped-off body in the water, there are plenty of loose threads that could materialize in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2. Our serial killer intentionally left Angel Batista's bloodied body in the vault, with Prater's fingerprints on the gun, as a parting gift to Quinn and the police. The wild goose chase for Batista's killer could help Dexter escape the police once again.

However, the biggest breadcrumb for Season 2 was the confusing reveal of the New York Ripper killer, who was identified as somebody named Don Framt. This seasoned bogeyman, who uses a crossbar-style murder weapon, has popped up throughout Season 1 and will certainly be a major part of Dexter: Resurrection Season 2. Additionally, Eric Stonestreet's AI, the only surviving serial killer from Prater's club, will also likely return to bite our serial killer in the sophomore season.
