Fans have been wondering if The Avengers would appear in the Disney+ Marvel Universe. Brad Winderbaum answered this question at the Disney presentation at the Upfront event on Tuesday. When asked about the chances of the Disney+ Marvel shows featuring a cameo from The Avengers or its team members, Winderbaum, a Marvel Executive, stated:

"Producing shows with marquee names, it made it really challenging to produce second seasons; the margins on TV are smaller. Looking to the future, does it mean that we won’t have big Avengers names? No. They may not be the titular character of the show, but they can still make appearances."

What he said lines up with Internet scooper Jeff Sneider's newsletter from last week hinted that there might be a bit of separation between the movies and Disney+ shows. But the shows might have small references to the wider events like the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.

While some might be disappointed by this recent development, it should be noted that this makes sense. Also, this is similar to how the Netflix Marvel Universe had references to the major events in the movies. For instance, both Daredevil Season 1 and Jessica Jones Season 2 had references to The Avengers.

Why does it make sense that The Avengers might have just small mentions in the Disney+ Marvel Universe?

The Avengers is a popular superhero team thanks to the MCU movies. Until the 2012 movie, the Avengers were considered the rejects of the Marvel Universe ever since their first comic book appearance in 1963. The success of the 2012 movie catapulted this team to popularity. But, regardless of their popularity, respected Avengers like Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man appeared in other characters' comics.

In the MCU, while the superhero team did not appear in other solo projects, The Avengers are name-dropped now and then. The team and its characters were also mentioned in the Netflix Marvel Universe, despite the movies not mentioning them.

Now, it looks like the situation is similar, but considering that the rights for the Avengers characters and Netflix Marvel ones are owned by Disney. It is also worth noting that it is fine if Disney+ Marvel shows don't feature appearances by Captain America, Thor, or any other movie characters. because these shows might have their own Avengers-style team: The Defenders.

Disney+ Marvel shows don't need The Avengers because it might be building towards The Defenders

Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 concluded with Mayor Wilson Fisk emerging victorious. Daredevil, on the run, forms a small army to bring down Fisk's regime that has outlawed masks. The season 1 finale ended in a way that The Defenders might join Matt in taking down Fisk in season 2. This theory gained more traction when Krysten Ritter was confirmed officially for Born Again Season 2.

Ritter's return was confirmed at the Upfront event, where the actress said this:

"It’s so great to be back, returning to Jessica after three seasons and ‘The Defenders’ and now joining the MCU. I’m so excited to bring back this iconic character, and without giving too much away, there is much more in store for Jessica Jones. This is going to be an incredible season!"

While Luke Cage and Danny Rand's return hasn't been confirmed, many people feel that this might be just for the time being.
