Fringe is considered one of the most popular sci-fi series that reimagines FBI investigations through a bizarre and unique lens. Unlike typical stories, this TV show follows Olivia Dunham, an FBI agent who joins a special unit called the Fringe Division.
Her job? To solve some of the weirdest, most unexplainable cases that stretch the limits of science. Olivia encounters cases like bringing the dead back to life or teleporting people across space. However, she's not alone in handling these challenges.
Olivia is joined by a brilliant but mentally unstable scientist, Dr. Walter Bishop, and his son Peter. Together, the trio digs into dark mysteries and slowly uncovers secrets about shady companies and illegal experiments. This way, Fringe was able to focus on many intriguing plotlines, and there has been speculation about a reboot.
But for now, the idea of bringing back Fringe remains more of a hope than a plan. Although the creative team behind the show has occasionally tossed around the idea of a reboot or continuation, nothing solid has come from these talks.
Akiva Goldsman, one of the show’s executive producers, mentioned that there was a discussion, but they couldn't figure out how to make it work.
Keep reading to learn what exactly Goldsman said about the reboot.
Is a Fringe reboot happening soon? All you need to know

Since the sci-fi series concluded after Season 5, there has been speculation about a reboot. As previously explained, the series' EP Akiva Goldsman shed light on a discussion with the co-creators, J.J. Abrams and Jeff Pinkner, but it didn't work out.
Goldsman said (via Collider):
"We talked to Warner Bros. and we talked to ourselves... but we didn't find a way through it."
Goldsman emphasized that Pinkner, who played a key creative role in the original series, would absolutely need to be involved in any reboot attempt. The EP called him "the heart of Fringe" and added:
"He's a wonderful writer and wonderful man and wonderful showrunner."
There are a few major obstacles preventing the show's comeback. First, the original cast is scattered across different projects now, which makes scheduling and interest a big issue.
A heartbreaking blow to any reboot idea was the death of Lance Reddick, who played Agent Broyles and was hugely loved by fans. Without him, the dynamic of the original cast would already feel incomplete.
Why 2026 has fans talking about a Fringe reboot

One of the dates that repeatedly comes up in fan theories is 2026. That date holds importance in the series' mythology since it's the year that Peter Bishop's consciousness is projected during one of the main episodes of Season 3.
Viewers feel this makes 2026 an ideal year to bring the series back, potentially slotting a reboot into the overall timeline. Once more, however, there isn't an announced plan or date from the creators about a reboot this year—it's only speculation so far.
What would a Fringe reboot look like (If it ever happens)

If Fringe were to be reimagined for today’s TV landscape, the format would likely change. Instead of longer seasons with standalone episodes, it might go for a more streamlined structure—think 8 to 10 episodes per season with a tighter, more connected storyline.
This would match the current trend in prestige TV, where storytelling is more serialized and character-focused. Any new version would likely hold on to the show’s signature mix of scientific mystery and emotional intensity. The bizarre, mind-bending cases were a huge part of its charm, and fans would expect that same energy in a reboot.
