It has been five years since I Know This Much Is True premiered on HBO, but fans are still not over the drama.

Based on Wally Lamb’s 1998 novel of the same name, the show got popular due to its intense storyline, emotional theme, and Mark Ruffalo’s powerful performance.

It tells the story of two identical twins, Dominick and Thomas Birdsey, who live in the fictional town of Three Rivers. Thomas suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and is taken to a hospital for the mentally ill after an unfortunate incident. Dominick then takes it upon himself to rescue his brother.

The show featured only six episodes, which left fans asking for more. Five years later, audiences are still wondering whether there will be an I Know This Much Is True Season 2. Well, the show will not be returning with another season as it was always intended to be a limited series.

Why there won’t be an I Know This Much Is True Season 2

I Know This Much Is True Season 2 is not in development at HBO. The show was billed as a miniseries from the beginning, which was supposed to last only one season. Since the show’s conclusion in 2020, there have been no discussions about continuing the project.

Additionally, the series is an adaptation of Wally Lamb’s novel. The entire story of the book has been covered in one season, so there is no scope for the plot to continue, unless Lamb comes up with a sequel novel.

Hence, the show has come to a natural conclusion. Unless some limited series that end up getting renewed due to popular demand and sometimes follow an anthology approach, HBO has decided to let I Know This Much Is True be a miniseries. Thus, despite critical acclaim and multiple awards, the show is not getting a second season.

In the final episode of I Know This Much Is True, Thomas left home after being released from the hospital. He was later found drowned at a waterfall, which he believed possessed holy water. While no one knew whether it was an accident or suicide, Dominick blamed himself for his brother’s death.

At Thomas’s funeral, Dominick confronted his stepfather, Ray, and accused him of causing trouble in the family. Ray later suffered a heart attack, and Dominick decided to take care of him. Ray then told Dominick that his real father was Henry Drinkwater, who had died during the Korean War.

Learning the truth finally helped Dominick make peace with his past. He then began to heal and work on his relationships, especially with his ex-wife Dessa and his friend Leo. The story ended with Dominick and Dessa welcoming their twins.

The series starred Mark Ruffalo as Dominick and Thomas Birdsey, Kathryn Hahn as Dessa Constantine, John Procaccino as Ray Birdsey, Rob Huebel as Leo, Melissa Leo as Ma, Michael Greyeyes as Ralph Drinkwater, Rosie O'Donnell as Lisa Sheffer, Juliette Lewis as Nedra Frank, Archie Panjabi as Dr. Patel, and Marcello Fonte as Domenico Onofrio Tempesta.
