Enjoyed the wild dystopian ride in Disney+’s latest animated series, and curious about the status of Marvel Zombies Season 2? You are not alone.
Disney+ recently premiered Marvel Zombies, a dystopian adult animated series, based on the eponymous Marvel comics and a continuation of What If... Zombies?! episode. All four episodes of the animated show are now streaming on Disney+.
Marvel Zombies is set in the same alternative universe introduced in What If...? and follows a virus that has turned the majority of the population into zombies, including the Avengers. The show follows a group of survivors as they discover a way to end this zombie plague and fight against superpowered zombies.
The premiere follows a group of surviving young Avengers, Kate Bishop, Riri Williams, and Kamala Khan, as they discover the key to saving the world. Other characters featured in this dystopian world include Spider-Man, Valkyrie, Shang-Chi, Hawkeye, Captain America, and many more beloved Avengers.
Marvel has neither renewed nor canceled Marvel Zombies Season 2 yet. While the show was initially developed as a movie and was later changed into a four-episode "mini-movie event", Brad Winderbaum, the Head of Marvel Entertainment, has shown interest in Season 2. However, fan response and viewership numbers for Season 1 will eventually decide the fate of this Marvel animated series.
More on Marvel Zombies Season 2 in our story.
Brad Winderbaum has plans for Marvel Zombies Season 2
While the animated series is marketed as a self-contained story for Season 1 and is labeled as a mini-series by the creators, Brad Winderbaum has plans for Marvel Zombies Season 2.
In an interview with Nerdist, the Head of Marvel Television hinted that Marvel Zombies has scope for many more stories set in the dystopian world, and could introduce many beloved comic book characters. Winderbaum said it clearly that Marvel is interested in exploring the show for another season:
''...There are some characters I’m excited to explore. And certainly, we could do that with Marvel Zombies...And there’s still plenty [of characters] to use. There are a number of them. The story originally was much, much larger, and there was no room to put them all in.”
Considering the number of Marvel superheroes that have not made their live-action debut yet, we can only imagine the scope for Marvel Zombies Season 2. Winderbaum's comments clearly hint that Marvel is interested in more zombie-filled adventures, but it all depends on the numbers.
Winderbaum added:
“Demand the next one and the next season. Then we’ll get in and we can surprise you a whole other second time around.”
Can Marvel Zombies Season 2 happen?
Now that the Head of Marvel Television has given the go-ahead for Marvel Zombies Season 2, it can certainly happen. However, before that, the recently released Season 1 would have to prove its performance on streaming and gain viewership. While many creators want to explore certain characters and narratives further, it boils down to viewership and streaming numbers. Disney+ will only invest in Marvel Zombies Season 2 if Season 1 performs well and garners strong viewership and subscriptions for the platform.
However, the popularity of zombie-centred stories and the positive reviews suggest that Season 1 was a hit among the audience. Because the animated show was created in response to fan reactions and the success of the "What If... Zombies?!" episode, there’s plenty of room for fresh storylines to appear on the small screen.
Additionally, Season 1's standalone format easily allows creators to bring in unique narratives and unexplored characters into the fold. The vastness of the MCU also suggests that new characters can appear in subsequent seasons, but all of this will depend on the creators' creative decisions and fan response to Season 1.
