Monica Beltran, a character played by Natalie Morales in Grey’s Anatomy, has an uncertain future in Season 22.
The cast list and description of one of the episodes indicate that she could be dead after the finale of Season 21, where an explosion put several characters in danger. With Natalie Morales not appearing in the Season 22 cast, it fuels suspicion of her demise.
The trailers also suggest that a significant event is going to happen that seemingly involves Monica or a loved one, most likely Amelia Shepherd.
Monica entered Season 20 of Grey's Anatomy as a pediatric surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. She quickly formed a close relationship with Amelia and Winston. After the events of Season 21, we do not know what happened to her, but cast descriptions and trailers almost definitely refer to her demise.
If she dies, it will be very stirring as she has become the primary support for Amelia. Season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy will likely explore the other characters’ reactions to the loss of Monica.
Monica Beltran’s fate in Grey’s Anatomy Season 22

The Season 21 finale of Grey's Anatomy culminated with an explosion that threatened the lives of a number of characters. Although Season 22 is set to release today, the official cast list has been released, which does not include Natalie Morales.
Providing more evidence for Monica’s demise is the episode synopsis for Season 22, Episode 2, which states that Amelia Shepherd is spending some alone time. This can be interpreted to mean the character is somehow grieving Monica's loss, given the pronounced bond between the two characters, according to ScreenRant.
Another confirmation comes as Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 trailer shows Amelia distraught and being physically restrained by Winston. While we do not necessarily know the motivation behind the storyline yet, the behavior is fitting for someone grieving a loved one.
Although Amelia and Monica were never romantically involved on screen, they both had a relationship built on respect and shared support. If Monica dies, it will have a major impact on Amelia. As many fans have noticed, sometimes the show protects main characters and places others at risk in events. While this was done with Monica for a couple of seasons, she had definitively become an established character.
Grey's Anatomy makeup artist shared behind-the-scenes photos of Natalie Morales on set filming episode 21, providing proof that she filmed episodes around the explosion. However, the biggest indicator that Monica is likely dead in the show is that she is not mentioned among the cast of Season 22.
While showrunner Meg Marinis does not reveal who survives the explosion, she did say that the new episodes would focus on the aftermath and how the hospital employees and patients deal with the situation.
Grey's Anatomy Season 22 overview
Grey’s Anatomy season 22 will air on October 9, 2025, and will immediately follow the gas explosion at the Grey Sloan Memorial Bay hospital that ended Season 21. The audience will see the events unfold in the first episode Only the Strong Survive as medical staff respond to the injured, experience additional trauma, and save as many lives as possible.
One of the main storylines for this season will be Amelia Shepherd dealing with the aftermath of the explosion, the potential death of her close friend Monica Beltran, and the aftermath of this on her own relationships.
This season of Grey’s Anatomy will also cover relational changes of the Grey Sloan staff, both romantic and/or professional, including Simone, Lucas, Jules, Winston, Teddy, Owen, and Ben. And of course, Meredith Grey will continue her Alzheimer’s research while balancing her surgical ease, keeping the incredibly successful formula of drama, medicine, and emotional storytelling very much alive.
