For years, fans of NCIS have been awaiting a reunion between beloved characters Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva David (Cote de Pablo). Their chemistry and drama became a hallmark of the series and contributed to the evolution of the crime genre on TV. Now, their prayers are being answered with NCIS: Tony & Ziva, a 10-episode journey across Europe!
This new chapter in the NCIS franchise capitalizes on the "Tiva" ship. But, rather than a fresh case each week in the traditional format of its network counterparts, the show will have a single mystery through the season. This approach is tailored for streaming with its hook to engage us more emotionally.
If you're eager to see Tony and Ziva back in action, you'll have to switch from TV to a streaming device, though. Their latest escapades won't be airing on broadcast television. Instead, Paramount+ decided it's a better fit online.
They say this will let them tell a more exciting, movie-like story. Don't expect the "solve a crime in an hour" format. It's more like a James Bond movie!
Why is NCIS: Tony & Ziva streaming on Paramount?
George Cheeks, president of CBS and chief content officer for Paramount+, talked to Vulture about NCIS: Tony & Ziva. He said it's going to be "more like a serialized streaming show". So, each episode won't be a new case.
They're taking Tony and Ziva out of Washington and putting them in Paris, France. They're dealing with a cyber-attack, bad guys, and also how to be good parents to their teenage girl, Tali. Since there won't be too many episodes (about 10 to 13 every season), writers can dig into the characters and their lives.
This is something fans wanted for a long time, especially after that weird "death" plot where we thought Ziva was gone forever.
Streaming also provides for edgier content, similar to how Criminal Minds: Evolution got a twist on Paramount+.
The European backdrop is likely to intensify NCIS: Tony & Ziva, as the pair is wrongly accused of bombings and pursued by Interpol, and they will be forced to work from outside the system. While NCIS is rooted in its original network, Paramount+ allows the show to evolve.
