As Jamie and Claire prepare to ride into Outlander Season 8, fans are wondering how Starz's critically acclaimed historical fantasy series will wrap their decade-spanning epic love story.

Outlander Season 8 marks the return of Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe as the lead pair navigating family dynamics and politics in 18th-century Scotland. While the couple has faced many ups and downs throughout the seven seasons, the final season will bring them back to Fraser's Ridge and reunite them with their family members and some new enemies.

While the show has faithfully followed the narrative in Diana Gabaldon's eponymous books throughout the seven seasons, the ending for the final season will differ. Jamie and Claire will have a different conclusion from the author's unwritten tenth and final book.

Now that Starz has unveiled the official release date for Outlander Season 8, fans are eagerly waiting for the final chapter in Jamie and Claire's epic love story. While the upcoming season will end the frustratingly long droughtlander, it will mark the final outing in the lead couple's decade-spanning love story and journey. Before the show premieres, fans are already wondering about Outlander's ending

As the Starz series gears up for its final outing, the biggest challenge comes from Diana Gabaldon's source material, as the author has not yet completed her tenth and final book in the Outlander series. Amidst these speculations and rumours, the author took to her Facebook page and revealed that Outlander Season 8 will feature a different ending than the books.

Answering a fan query on her Facebook page, the author wrote:

''There's only so much I can say about the show, but what I can say is that it really won't resemble the end of the book series. I think people will be OK with it, but it won't resemble much of Book 10 only because there isn't room.''

Why will Outlander Season 8's ending differ from the books?

Outlander Season 8 will only contain 10 episodes (as opposed to the 16 episodes in its freshman season), making the mammoth task to fit three whole books (in one season) even more daunting.

Since Outlander Season 7 Part 2 roughly concluded with Book 7 titled An Echo in the Bone, the final season still has material from Book 8 titled Written in My Own Heart's Blood, Book 9 titled Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone and the unwritten Book 10 titled A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out.

While some fans expressed disappointment with the different conclusions in the Starz series and the books, Gabaldon noted that it is almost impossible for the creators and cast to fit three whole books in just ten episodes. Additionally, since the creators only have a working synopsis for Book 10 for now, the ending of the final season will differ from the books. The author wrote:

"Even if the show-folk had a full copy of the whole book (I told them as much as I knew about it), there's no way the show would resemble it. The basic constraint is that season 8 has only 10 episodes – and in terms of book/show generally, they can't possibly get more than 10% of each book into a season.''

While the situation is unusual and a challenge for the show, fans can expect a more streamlined and emotionally focused ending in Season 8. The novels introduce dozens of subplots and historical threads that the show cannot fully explore. Thus, Season 8 will likely narrow its focus to the relationships at the heart of the story: Jamie & Claire, Brianna & Roger and the extended Fraser family whose fates remain intertwined across time.

Catch the Outlander Season 8 premiere on Starz on March 6.
