Sky Max premiered The Lazarus Project in June 2022, a mind-bending British science fiction series based on time travel. Following the success of Season 1, the show was renewed for a sophomore season in August 2022, which premiered in November 2023.
The time-travel show follows George, who is recruited by the Lazarus team, to race against time and put an end to the three-week time loop that has engulfed the world. The show explored themes of rewriting the past and the changes it ignites in the present.
Led by Paapa Essiedu, Anjli Mohindra, Tom Burke, Caroline Quentin, and a talented ensemble cast, the show gained a 28-day audience of 1.7 million on its premiere. While Essiedu won a BAFTA TV Award nomination for leading actor, the show also bagged a BAFTA Cymru after two seasons.
Despite these achievements, Sky cancelled The Lazarus Project after Season 2 in March 2024, and the show will not return for another season.
More on this in our story.
The Lazarus Project was cancelled after Season 2
Much to its fans' disappointment, Sky cancelled The Lazarus Project after Season 2, and the mind-bending sci-fi show will not return with Season 3.
According to Digital Spy, the official statement from Sky reads as follows,
"The Lazarus Project has brought audiences jaw-dropping action and time-bending storylines across two seasons, and we are incredibly proud of this BAFTA-winning series. Whilst we won’t be commissioning another season, we would like to thank the incredible team who made this show possible."
While the show managed to amass a wide fan base and even became Sky Max's second-biggest new scripted show, it could not justify the huge production cost. The show was certainly strong in vision and acting, but insiders felt that it lacked the conviction for another season, which is the reason why Sky axed The Lazarus Project after Season 2.
After the disappointing news of its cancellation, BAFTA award-winning screenwriter Joe Barton (Black Doves), who also penned the script for the show, took to X and wrote,
"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.''
This was a much-needed reminder for fans who were waiting for the show's return after an intense Season 2 finale, which left many unanswered questions and a cliffhanger.
The Lazarus Project Season 2 finale ended on a cliffhanger
While the news of The Lazarus Project's cancellation was disappointing for its loyal fans, they were also furious that the show would not address all the unanswered questions and the cliffhanger in the Season 2 finale.
Before the news of the cancellation, Essiedu revealed his hopes for potential seasons in an interview with Radio Times,
"Let's just say season 2 also makes an invitation for the story to continue. Because the journey that we go on in the second series is just as wild and unexpected and twisty as the first series, if not even more so. I can't wait to see how people respond to the end of that eighth episode."
The actor was certainly correct, as the eighth episode was packed with twists and one final mission for George and the team, who went back to 2012 to save Janet and put an end to the three-week time loop. However, things took a wild turn when Sarah switched sides and destroyed the time machine with a bomb, sacrificing past Janet in the process.
While Shiv, Wes, and Rebrov's fates are still unknown, George managed to get on the plane with both Beckys, and they made it back to July 22, 2024, and successfully broke the three-week time loop.
However, the final moments of The Lazarus Project Season 2 saw George visiting the destroyed Lazarus HQ, where he finds Sarah sitting in Wes' office, waiting for him. The finale hinted that while George managed to break the time loop, Sarah took Wes' place in the project, leaving many mysteries that will likely not be answered now.
