CBS’ Watson is a fresh take on Arthur Conan Doyle's detective novels, as it follows Dr. John Watson, who restarts his medical practice in Pittsburgh after his companion Sherlock Holmes’ death.

Sherlock’s voice can still be heard in the show in John’s hallucinations. Actor Matt Berry voices the character but never appears on the screen. Morris Chestnut, who plays the titular role in the mystery medical drama, has now talked about whether Sherlock will ever make a physical appearance in Watson.

In an interview with Deadline, the actor revealed that since Sherlock Holmes comes back from the dead as per the detective novel’s lore, he could make an appearance in the CBS series in the future. Chestnut said,

“I will say Holmes, you know, in the mythology, does come back… and we are part of the mythology.”

In the show, Dr. John moves to Pittsburgh, where he opens the Holmes Clinic and deals with some intriguing medical cases with his team of doctors. Meanwhile, he is haunted by Sherlock’s death at the hands of his archenemy Moriarty.

As per Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels, Sherlock died in the book The Final Problem but was resurrected in The Adventure of the Empty House. If Watson follows the same lore, Sherlock can indeed appear in the series.

Meanwhile, Morris Chestnut also opened up about what to expect from the upcoming second season of the show, revealing that medical cases will be at the center of the narrative this time:

“We’re going to focus more on the medical cases. There’s going to be more humor and wit. Season 1 was a very challenging season, primarily because it was dealing with the effects of James Moriarty, who was the villain in the show.”

He added:

“Watson was on [medication] and [Moriarty] was messing with his prescriptions. Now that’s behind him, he’s going to have a little bit more fun and be a little bit more loose. But overall… we’re going to focus really on the very unique medical cases.”

The show premiered on CBS in January this year and received praise for its perfect blend of mystery and medical genres. Each episode showcased Dr. John using both his detective and medical skills to find out what went wrong with a victim. The series became a massive success for CBS and was quickly renewed for a second season, which is expected to premiere in January 2026.

Apart from Chestnut, the series stars Eve Harlow as Ingrid Derian, Inga Schlingmann as Sasha Lubbock, Rochelle Aytes as Mary Morstan, Ritchie Coster as Shinwell Johnson, Peter Mark Kendall as Stephens Croft and Adam Croft, and Randall Park as Professor James Moriarty.
